Relationships
Relationship between an advisor and student organization constituents

The majority of interaction between the advisor and organization will occur between the advisor and the organization’s leadership.
An advisor and student should have an open, honest relationship and have the opportunity to share ideas, receive feedback,
and build trust.
- The responsibility for building the relationship does not fall only on the student or the advisor. It is a shared responsibility
that should be viewed as a partnership. The mutual relationship you share should be based upon open, direct communication.
It is helpful to share needs, responsibilities, and expectations with one another.
- Work to recognize and understand the other person’s various roles and responsibilities they have in and out of their organization/position.
- Understand that both the advisor and student are human beings who make mistakes, have their own value systems, and work in
a variety of individual, professional, and personal styles. Accept, discuss, and learn from mistakes- then move on!
- Challenge and support each other, as both advisor and student continually grow, change, and learn. Remember you each are in
your own unique stage of development!
