Dear Falcon Parents,

Greetings from Bowling Green State University! It’s difficult to believe that the academic year is nearly at an end. Spring break week, March 3-7, marks the midpoint (students may say the high point) of the spring semester. For all of us at BGSU, it signals the end of a very cold winter with lots to look forward to in the final weeks of the semester.

First on the horizon is the MAC Basketball Tournament March 9-15 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Our BGSU men’s and women’s teams are among the 12 conference schools competing for a bid to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Students and parents who’d like to be part of this run to the Final Four will find game schedules and ticket information online at www.bgsufalcons.com. Let’s take the House That Roars to the Q!

Coming up March 29-30 is the 13th annual BGSU Dance Marathon. This 32-hour fund-raising event, which is the largest in the state, benefits the Mercy Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent’s Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. Students are planning to dance their way to $200,000 at this year’s event. Funds raised by BGSU students in the past now total more than $1 million and have been used to build the overnight stay room at St. Vincent’s for families of children awaiting surgery, as well as to support a therapy pets program and entertainment options for long-term patients. If your student is looking for an enjoyable way to give back, this is it. Dancing is not required; the committee has lots of support positions available to assist with this big event. Urge your student to get involved. You’ll find more information online at www.bgdancemarathon.com.

Our annual Sibs N Kids Weekend is set for April 11-13. Age-appropriate events are planned throughout the weekend including a carnival sponsored by our Resident Student Association. You should be receiving a schedule of events and registration information in early March. This is a great weekend for younger brothers and sisters to visit campus and experience campus life.

Spring break and the approaching summer break are always good times to mention personal safety. Whether your student is traveling during break or staying at home, you may want to urge him or her to take care when driving, especially in unfamiliar surroundings or bad weather. As always, encourage your student to think carefully about the legal and responsible use of alcohol.

This leads me to BGSU’s role in keeping your student safe on campus. This past year, BGSU implemented a text messaging program, AlertBG, to communicate with students, faculty and staff (and parents if the student includes the appropriate cell phone number when registering) in the event of any emergency on campus. You may want to check that your student signed up. If not, please urge him or her to do so by clicking on the AlertBG link at www.bgsu.edu. Just a reminder to you and your student, that there will be a campus-wide test of all emergency notification systems, including AlertBG, on Wednesday, March 12 at 10:30 a.m.

Other communication channels we use to post necessary safety messages include campus emails and the BGSU Web site, www.bgsu.edu. Our campus police force has specialized training in handling a variety of situations and we are diligent in educating our students, faculty and staff on managing potentially dangerous situations where they work and live. Finally, we provide a safety net for students who may be experiencing problems. Our counseling center offers walk-in hours as well as scheduled appointments for those times when students need someone to listen and help.

As always, if I can be of assistance, please feel free to contact me at vpsa@bgsu.edu or phone the Office of Student Affairs at 419-372-2147. Best wishes for a happy and healthy spring.

Sincerely,

Edward G. Whipple
Vice President for Student Affairs
