Seeking Certification
In order to move through the BGSU LEAD Program, you are required to submit to the Certification Committee for approval when you and your mentor believe you have reached the
end of each PHASE. This will allow for more rapid feedback on smaller portions of the program, and ultimately deeper learning. In order to
request a certification review, you must follow the steps below.
-
Contact the Office of Campus Activities at 419-372-2343 to request a certification review date/time. This must be done at least two weeks in advance.
-
Submit evidence that is relevant to the phase under review. Evidence from all phases should be maintained by the student in a portfolio to be submitted upon completion of Phase IV;
however, only materials applicable to the phase under review should be submitted for approval during phases I – III. This
must be done at least two weeks in advance for phases I – III and three weeks in advance for phase IV.
-
Submit a recommendation from your mentor. Mentors may choose to use the provided recommendation form (see Appendix C) or to write a letter on your behalf. A more detailed
letter of recommendation from the mentor is required when you prepare to submit for Phase IV certification.
-
Attend your certification review at the designated time. The Certification Committee will review your materials and provide feedback within one week of your certification review meeting.
For phases I – III, you will either be awarded a phase-level certificate or informed of the specific areas in which additional
work is needed. Should the latter be the case, you may resubmit additional evidence to the committee at a later date.
When you are ready to submit for Phase IV Certification, you must compile all of the documents from the previous phases into
one cohesive, understandable, and meaningful portfolio. Evaluation of this document by the Certification Committee will be
more time intensive. Therefore, the Phase IV portfolio must be submitted three weeks prior to the review date. Students should
expect feedback regarding Phase IV certification within two weeks of their certification review.
A certificate can be awarded at any time during the semester; however, you may only be certified for one phase per semester.
In rare cases (e.g., transfer students), students may be able to provide acceptable evidence of previous learning experiences
and “test out” of early phases of the program. Such situations will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the student’s
mentor and the Certification Committee.
You are encouraged to continue to develop your skills in each of the competency domains as you continue to interact with your
mentor and engage in advanced leadership experiences throughout your college career and into your future. Becoming an effective
leader is a lifelong process!
