Assessing your Progress
The BGSU LEAD Certification Criteria will help you to assess the extent to which you have developed the skills and knowledge associated with each of the nine leadership
competencies. Within each competency domain you will find both conceptual (i.e. how well do you understand the concept?) and
behavioral (i.e. how have you employed this concept in practice?) requirements. You are expected to spend time learning about
each competency, practicing each competency, and ultimately integrating your theoretical understanding with personal reflections
from practice.
Familiarity with the BGSU LEAD Certification Criteria will greatly benefit you in the long run. Read this document at the
time of enrollment and continue to refer back to the certification criteria as you progress through the program.
The Certification Criteria are NOT a precise recipe for completion of BGSU LEAD. This document is intended to serve as a guide,
but the ways in which you fulfill the requirements of each competency remain at your discretion. These criteria are intended
to be interpretable, as only your time, energy, and creativity should limit your completion of this program. THERE IS NO SINGLE
RECIPE FOR COMPLETING BGSU LEAD!
In addition to the BGSU LEAD Certification Criteria, your mentor will be supplied with detailed learning rubrics for each
competency. This document will help you and your mentor to assess the depth of learning that has transpired and, when used
in conjunction with the Certification Criteria, to determine when you are prepared to submit for certification. The detailed
learning rubrics are available in the Mentor Handbook.
You don’t have to make sense of the Certification Criteria or learning rubrics alone. Quite the contrary, you should seek
extensive feedback from your mentor and work together to determine when you have met the standards for each competency. Should
you and your mentor have questions about a particular competency you are invited to contact the Office of Campus Activities
for further clarification.
