Who will help me?

The BGSU LEAD Mentor is the key to helping students develop a thoughtful and ethical approach to leadership. Your mentor may be any faculty or staff member at BGSU who is willing to commit to the requirements listed below. You may select your own mentor or be paired with one from a list of individuals who have agreed to serve in this capacity.

Your mentor brings to the table a particular perspective based on his or her personal leadership experiences, which will be an asset as you approach your personal leadership development journey. He or she will serve as a sounding board upon which you may process your learning and expand your repertoire of leadership knowledge and skills. Your mentor is there to help guide your process of development, encouraging and coaching you along the way. However, unlike your academic advisor, it is not your mentor’s job to tell you precisely how to complete each of the competencies and phases. Your mentor will assist you in finding learning opportunities, but will not provide you all of the answers. In many ways, you will engage in this process of leadership learning together.

Representatives in the Office of Campus Activities are also available to help you decipher the logistics of the BGSU LEAD Program. Should problems arise with your mentor (i.e. your mentor is leaving the university), these individuals will help you to make alternative arrangements and continue to progress on your leadership journey.

Listed below are the minimum requirements of the BGSU LEAD Mentor. Each mentoring relationship is unique; however, so please feel free to be creative in how you and your mentor work to fulfill these requirements!

BGSU LEAD MENTOR REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of the BGSU LEAD Mentor Training, a two-hour session offered during the last month of each semester by the Office of Campus Activities. Mentors are only required to complete this training once.

  • A minimum of three meetings per semester with each student whom you are mentoring. It is the responsibility of the student to schedule these meetings.

  • Work with each student to develop a personalized plan for progression through the BGSU LEAD program Students are required to submit their written plan to the board each semester. Working with your student(s) to develop this plan will allow you to develop mutual goals for their progress and will provide you a timeline against which to benchmark their progress throughout the semester. This plan is tentative and may be tailored as necessary.

  • Ongoing assessment and feedback with student throughout their completion of the program.

  • Completion of the “Recommendation for Certification” form each time you believe your student has successfully fulfilled the criteria for a particular phase of the BGSU LEAD program.

  • Open and honest communication with your student, the Leadership Advisory Board, and the Certification Committee.
