What is the BGSU LEAD Program?
BGSU LEAD is a self-paced, comprehensive, leadership development program designed to augment and enhance current leadership opportunities available to students at
Bowling Green State University. All full-time undergraduate students with a 2.5 grade point average and an interest in developing
their leadership skills are eligible to enroll in this four-phase program. Students enrolled in the BGSU LEAD program will
work closely with a faculty or staff mentor to develop competency in the following areas: (1) Exploring Leadership, (2) Self-Awareness and Leadership, (3) Exploring Personal
and Professional Ethics, (4) Communication Skills, (5) Relationship Building, (6) Involving Others, (7) Managing the Process,
(8) Understanding Organizations, and (9) Improving Communities.
Representatives from across Bowling Green State University’s campus, many of whom have been practicing and studying leadership
their entire careers, have agreed that effective leaders demonstrate competency in the nine areas listed above. The working
definition of leadership around which these competencies have been developed, is as follows:
“Leadership is a relational, transformative, process-oriented, learned, and change-directed phenomenon (Rost, 1993). Effective
leaders demonstrate knowledge of self and the ability to work interdependently toward the betterment of society.”
The BGSU LEAD program is based on a few fundamental assumptions about leadership. First and foremost, we believe that leadership
skills and knowledge can be learned. Additionally, we believe that any individual has the potential to develop the skills and knowledge that will make him/her
an effective leader. This means that you have the potential to be an effective leader!
