BGSU Dining To Undergo Renovations This summer, as part of its mission to consistently deliver superior service in the most efficient way, for the benefit of customers, BGSU Dining will be undergoing various renovations in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. The Falcons Nest, Bowling Greenery, and The Black Swamp Pub will be renovated to create more services and better efficiencies in BGSU Dining’s operations. There will be new food concepts coming to the Falcon’s Nest, which was voted on by the campus community, to offer new selections, variety, and increase the speed of service. The Bowling Greenery will be closed, and services will be consolidated with the current Black Swamp Pub to create a new full service restaurant with a bistro/pub theme.
The renovations will also include relocating the Union computer lab and TV lounge. There will be no loss of computer stations, and the addition of a collaborative study area will be added. The new collaborative area will provide a space for students to work on group projects, presentations, and other assignments where large screen TV’s and projectors are available.
The renovations are scheduled to begin on May 7th and last through July 29th, with Starbucks remaining open for the entire summer, and other services provided on a temporary basis. Although many of the finishes and designs are still in the planning phase, it is BGSU Dining’s intention to make the new spaces LEED Certified, and there will be a high focus on efficiency and sustainability. BGSU Dining is excited to continually improve services and provide the students with quality, variety, and an overall dining experience that is nationally recognized for its excellence. Being Green: It’s part of our name!
Student interest in preserving and protecting our natural world for now and future generations (being “sustainable”) is at an all-time national high, and BGSU is no exception. Developing that interest and providing students with meaningful, rewarding and fun experiences in the sustainability area is part of the mission of the Office of Campus Sustainability. While there are academic majors devoted to the environmental area (Environmental Policy & Analysis, Environmental Science, and Environmental Health, as well as a sustainability minor, to name a few), amazing, unique and valuable volunteer/internship opportunities in sustainability are available to any student at BGSU, regardless of their major. Just some of those opportunities are:
- Friday Night Lights: We save big money each year through a student volunteer program that shuts off classroom/hallway lights every Friday evening for the weekend;
- Green Tailgating: Students operate recycling within/outside Doyt Perry Stadium at home football games and collect an average of 2 tons of cans/bottles per game;
- Green Break Service Trips: Students worked on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia with the U.S. Forest Service this past spring break, and did beachfront planting and debris removal in Pensacola, Florida last year;
- Green Fund: A pool of money is available to fund student-created sustainability projects; submit your “dream” idea and make it a reality!
- Orange Bikes: Students paint/maintain donated bikes that are made available for free use at bike racks across campus by other students;
- Re Store: A student-run second-hand store with all kinds of items where you can “swap” one thing for another or even get some things for free!
- Sustainability Internships: Students can obtain academic credit through taking a leadership/administrative role in a variety of sustainability areas. Limited paid opportunities exist also.
