Cooperative Education & Internship Program (CEIP) Policies

Student Eligibility

  • Any student regardless of race, sex, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, marital status, mental or physical disability, or veteran status is eligible.
  • Any undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing enrolled in a degree program is eligible.
  • Any academic major is eligible.
  •  Guest student eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Eligibility for students on academic warning or probation will be determined on a case by case basis.
  • International students may be eligible after they have met with the CEIP office and submitted a signed Cooperative Education Verification Form signed by the Manager of Student Immigration Services from the Center for International Programs certifying their eligibility to work in a cooperative education or internship position in the United States.

Is It Possible To Be Ineligible For a Co-op or Internship Position?

  • All cooperative education and internship positions are competitive. Participation in the program does NOT guarantee placement.
  • Students who have been suspended from the university are not eligible to participate in the program.
  • Students who have graduated, are not attending BGSU, or are not a guest student of the university are ineligible to participate in the program.

Costs and Academic Credit

  • All services of the Cooperative Education & Internship Program are FREE.
  • Students receive academic recognition for their Co-op and Internship experiences through a notation (CO-OP 050) placed on their transcript. This transcript notation is for zero credit hours, graded S/U (Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory), and maintains the ‘full-time’ status of the student by university policy.
  • Academic credit is not required by the Cooperative Education & Internship Program and cannot be awarded by the Cooperative Education & Internship Program.
  • Students who wish to receive academic credit must contact their academic department for departmental policies regarding academic credit for co-op/internship assignments. Students agree to pay all applicable university fees if they ultimately receive academic credit from their department.

Students who wish to participate in the Cooperative Education & Internship Program agree to:

  • Update their resume and profile information in the online job database (WorkNet) each semester
  • Sign a Liability Waiver/Credential Release form
  • Complete and sign a Student Letter of Agreement

  • Be supervised at the work site by the employer and have the right to not working in a hazardous environment.
  • Have automobile liability insurance if driving an automobile during the work assignment.

  • Complete and return the CEIP Student Assessment form provided by the Cooperative Education & Internship program at the end of each assignment.
  • Notify the Cooperative Education & Internship Program IMMEDIATELY of any change in employment or academic status during the assignment.

NOTE: Failure to meet these requirements may result in the student’s withdrawal from the assignment , forfeiture of any benefits provided by the Cooperative Education & Internship Program, and result in an Unsatisfactory grade for the COOP 050 transcript notation.

Interview

Students registered with the Cooperative Education & Internship Program agree to:
  • Accept an interview appointment with only those companies where there is a serious interest.
  • Write a letter of apology to an employer if the student cancels an interview, for any reason, on the day of the interview or fails to come to a scheduled interview. The student’s record will be placed in inactive status until a copy of the letter is given to the Cooperative Education & Internship Program.
NOTE: After two ‘no-shows’, the student will be suspended from the program.

Cooperative Education & Internship Policy (University policy effective Fall 2009)
Internships or co-ops are a required part of some degree programs and an optional part of other degree programs. In situations where the number of internships or co-ops is not determined by the program, students may undertake multiple internships or co-ops, but no more than three within the last 30 credit hours of the degree program. Students will not be permitted to participate in the internship program beyond one semester after completing all the degree requirements even if they have not graduated from BGSU. Exceptions to this policy may be granted by the dean of the college.
