The Ohio GI Promise was created by an Executive Order issued by Governor Ted Strickland. The Executive Order granted authority of the Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents to deem qualified veterans as Ohio residents for the purpose of qualifying for in-state tuition rates.
The Ohio Board of Regents rules indicate for Veteran students and their dependents (Provision C4) - Veterans need to prove either Honorable Discharge or Medical Separation with one year of service and prove they reside in Ohio as of the first day of enrollment. Dependents need to prove relationship to Veteran. For Provision C4 - BGSU requires that the student provide the following documentation: - Submit a completed Ohio Residency application and supporting documentation to the Office of Registration and Records during or prior to the term in which you are seeking a change in residency status.
- A copy of the veterans's Honorable Discharge or Medical Separation (with one year of service) papers.
- For a student living off-campus, a copy of a lease or closing statement showing residency in Ohio. If the student is living on-campus, the student needs to indicate their address on the application which will be validated by the Office of Registration and Records.
- For dependents of a Veteran, a copy of the veteran's previous year's federal tax return (page 1 only; shows dependents) or a copy of your marriage certificate if they did not file taxes jointly.
