Introduction
The advanced technological education major is
designed for persons with a technical and/or
applied associate degree who are employed in
business, industry, education, healthcare, social
services, or military service and wish to continue
their education and/or prepare for advancement.
The degree combines BG Perspective requirements
with a core curriculum that includes a technical
and/or applied cognate and courses in communication,
training, and technology systems management.
This degree has twenty-seven hours (nine courses) required for the major and eight hours of required cooperative education credit. The major courses are designed to supplement the student's work experience and technological expertise with educational experiences in a variety of study skill sets, including computer-mediated communication, technology systems in organizations, transformational learning, understanding adult learning, project and program evaluation systems, and organization and presentation of information to groups.
This degree requires a 36-hour cognate (area of technical and/or applied courses), which typically is transferred from an accredited associate degree. Combined, these technical and/or applied courses must demonstrate proficiency in a recognized technical area. In the event that there are fewer than 36 hours to complete a cognate, a College of Technology faculty advisor will approve courses to fulfill this requirement.
The Advanced Technological Education program is a member of the Air University Associate to Baccalaureate Consortium allowing Air Force service members to transfer their Community College applied associate degrees and obtain a Bachelor of Science in Technology bachelor degree in 60 semester hours or less.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in advanced technological education are expected to:
- Demonstrate critical, professional, and personal skills such as independent thinking, communication skills (oral, written and listening), ability to work effectively within groups, and a commitment to continuous learning;
- Demonstrate strong problem solving, questioning and investigative, and creative thinking skills;
- Exhibit ethical values and behavior by articulating the impact of alternative decisions on other people (customers, shareholders, the public), business operations, educational institutions, and the environment;
- Understand cultural, racial, and gender differences in education, business, and industry well enough to be able to address discriminatory practices;
- Communicate with others using Web-based communication technologies;
- Demonstrate an academic integration of their applied/technical cognate and the major courses stressing communication, training, and technology systems management.
Admission
Admission
to this program is limited to those with an
earned technical
and/or applied
associate degree and related work experience.
Admission to the program is a two-part process:
admission to BGSU, followed by admission to
the College of Technology's Advanced Technological
Education program. Admission to the
University does not guarantee admission to the
program.
Courses taken at a college or university on the quarter system will transfer as fewer hours than the BGSU equivalent. Some students must take additional courses in their degree program to earn the required 123 semester credit hours. A minimum of 40 hours of credit must be at the 3000 or 4000 level.
