International
applicants whose native language is not English
are required to submit evidence of English language
skills in the form of an official Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), a Michigan English
Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or an International
English Language Testing System (IELTS) score.
BGSU requires a TOEFL score of at least 520
(paper based), 173 (computer based), or 61 (internet
based); a MELAB score of at least 69; or an
IELTS score of at least 5.5.
Additionally,
all international applicants whose native language
is not English are required to take an English
proficiency test upon reporting to the University
and before registering for classes. International
students transferring from other colleges or
universities in the United States as well as
students from Puerto Rico are also required
to take these tests. Depending on a student’s
placement score, the University reserves the
right to require enrollment in and successful
completion of English courses leading to the
proficiency level expected in ENG 1010 &
1040: ENG 1000, ENG 1010, ENG 1030, and ENG
1040. The University may also limit the number
of courses taken for credit.
