The
Office of Academic Enhancement provides advising
and academic support designed to assist new
students in making a successful transition from
high school to the University, and provides
tutoring, mentoring, and individualized academic
assistance for continued success. These services
are provided through advising services as well
as the academic support centers.
Advising
Through
advising services, students may be coded into
one of two programs through Academic Enhancement.
Students who are undecided with regard to their
academic major are coded as Pre-Major Advising.
Students who are conditionally admitted to BGSU
enroll through the University Program for Academic
Success (UPAS). UPAS students must sign a contract
and are required to fulfill the expectations
of the contract in order to continue at BGSU.
All students in Academic Enhancement are assigned
to academic advisors who provide information
to students regarding academic resources and
majors exploration. Students cannot graduate
from these programs and are encouraged to declare
their major by the end of the third semester
at BGSU.

Many
students entering the University are unsure
of their choice of undergraduate college and/or
major area of study. Other students may not
know enough about the many options available
at BGSU to feel that they have enough information
to make a good choice. Still other students
may just be unsure of how their interests, abilities
and values relate to different majors in the
undergraduate colleges at the University. The
staff in Pre-Major Advising assists students
in the decision-making process. Academic advisors
in this program help students select classes
from the BG Perspective program. These classes
help students develop important skills, become
exposed to new areas of study as well as meet
requirements for the baccalaureate degree. In
addition to academic advising, students in this
program are also assisted in selecting an undergraduate
college.
University
Program for Academic Success (UPAS)

First-year
students admitted to the University Program
for Academic Success are offered the opportunity
to enroll in college courses while receiving
academic support that assists in making a successful
transition to the University. Group and individual
tutoring and comprehensive academic advising
are among the services available to participants
in the program. Admission is selective, but
not as competitive as regular fall and spring
admission. Each semester, students register
for approximately 15 credit hours that are carefully
selected in consultation with their academic
advisor to provide the appropriate level of
challenge.
Advanced
High School Programs

These
programs offer outstanding high school students
the opportunity to strengthen and enrich their
educational programs by enrolling in regular
University courses for high school and/or college
credit.
Students
who participate in Plan B of the Post Secondary
Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP) take university
courses for both high school and college credit.
The costs of tuition, fees, and textbooks are
paid for by the state.
Students
who participate in the High School College Credit
Program take university courses for university
credit and assume all costs of tuition, fees,
and textbooks.
Academic
Support
Academic support
services are available through the Math and
Stats Tutoring Center, Study Skills Center,
and the Writing Center for students who want
to achieve their academic goals. Through the
Math and Stats Tutoring Center, students will
gain assistance in understanding basic as well
as more advanced concepts in mathematics. The
Study Skills Center staff help students learn
more effective study and textbook reading skills
to apply to their coursework. Students may participate
in weekly small study groups led by a student
mentor to review study strategies in learning
course material. The Writing Center staff is
committed to helping writers take advantage
of the opportunities for learning inherent in
the writing process. Writers from various disciplines
are invited to work one-on-one with tutors during
hour-long sessions.
