The Academic Investment in Math and Science (AIMS) program is a 2001 initiative of President Sidney Ribeau. Its focus is to recruit/train/direct talented students to get their undergraduate degrees and eventually attain graduate/terminal degrees in math, computer science, and natural-science-based disciplines. AIMS scholars (AIMS scholarship awardees) begin their 4-year program with an intense 5-week program the summer immediately (Monday after July 4) before matriculating at BGSU. Other key components of the 4-year program are: AIMS Seminars (graded courses the first academic year), STEM (science/technology/engineering/math) Exposure, Undergraduate Research, Faculty mentoring, Graduate Record Exam (GRE), and MCAT preparation.

AIMS scholars must:

• have a 3.0 GPA (on a 4-point scale),
• have a 22 ACT or 1000 SAT score,
• major in curriculums consistent with STEM (science/technology/engineering/math),
• apply to the AIMS program,
• apply to BGSU and be admitted,
• desire to reach their full potential.

Due to the underrepresentation of students of color (minorities) and women at the doctoral level in STEM areas, those populations are encouraged to apply. Annually, 20 students will be accepted from across the country, but most from Ohio. AIMS scholars receive a $1000 stipend after successfully completing the 5-week summer program and greater than or equal to $1500 per year for the 4 academic years ($1500 in year one, $2000 in year two, $2500 in year three, and $3000 in year four). The $500 incremental increases in scholarship amounts are dependent on one remaining in "Good Standing": 2.75 GPA after year one, 2.85 GPA after year two, and 3.0 GPA after year three.
