Associate of Technical Study
Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic
Mona
Burke, M.A., RHIA, Adviser
This
program combines academic course work with paramedic education
to prepare Emergency Medical Technicians for leadership
roles in today's emergency medical services field. The
program recognizes satisfactory completion of the exam
for National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians
(NREMT). Through BGSU's credit-by-exam process, students
present official results of satisfactory completion of
the written and practical portions of the NREMT exams
in order to receive college credit that can be applied
to this program. Science and anatomy and physiology course
work complement practical skills and will result in enhanced
understanding of body systems. Students are able to select
two electives from a list of courses related to health
care, cultural diversity, social work, medical ethics,
or supervision.
The
program is designed to allow continuation as a 2+2 program
into BGSU's Bachelor's degree programs in Advanced Technological
Education (ATE) or Applied Health Science (Allied Health
specialization). The ATE program is ideal preparation
for those desiring to work in paramedic education programs
while the Applied Health degree provides a greater understanding
of the chemical and biological sciences as well as general
health and wellness courses.
The
associate degree program can be pursued in combination
with or separate from the paramedic education portion
received by any paramedic education provider. A typical
program for individuals pursuing academic and paramedic
education simultaneously appears below.
