The
foreign language education major is a competitive four-year
program that offers licensure in French, German, Latin,
Russian, and Spanish. Students who enroll in the major
are eligible for a multi-age (3-21) teaching certificate/license,
providing they have a 2.8 cumulative grade point average,
a 2.8 grade point average in the specialization, and have
successfully completed Praxis II Content Examinations.
Students in this major select one of five specializations:
French, German, Latin, Russian, or Spanish.

Outcomes
Upon
completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in the
foreign language education major are expected to:
- Apply
theories of human development and language learning
to their teaching through the design of lessons and
units of instruction;
- Plan,
Implement, and assess instructional strategies;
- Exhibit
professional and ethical behavior when working with
students, their parents, other educators, and community
members.

Students
apply for admission into the Professional Year (methods
and student teaching) one semester before the methods
experience is to begin. Criteria for admission into methods
include: "C" or better in EDHD 201, ENG 112,
IPC 102, EDFI 302, EDIS 431, EDTL 367, and EDTL 370. Students
must also have a 2.8 overall GPA and a 2.8 GPA in the
specialization. Finally, students must successfully complete
the Praxis II content exam(s) prior to being admitted
into the Methods Block. Methods block (semester one) includes:
EDTL 418, 420, 429, and EDFI 402. Students must complete
all four courses with a "C" or better AND maintain
a 2.8 GPA in the specialization area and a 2.8 overall
GPA to be admitted into student teaching. Prior to student
teaching, students must successfully complete two exams:
ACT Foreign Language Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)
and ACT Foreign Language Writing Proficiency Test (WPT).
Other
language programs are offered by the College
of Arts and Sciences.
