Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree for Art Major
The
School of Art is accredited by the National Association
of Schools of Art and Design and offers several degree
options in the visual arts. Central among them is the
bachelor of fine arts degree. The requirements for the
B.F.A. degree, in addition to the general requirements
listed in the Academic
Policies section of this catalog, include the passing
of an initial portfolio review upon admission and completion
of:

Degree
requirements;
-
A
core of art foundation courses (9 hours);
-
A
major in either two-dimensional or three-dimensional
studies including:
- 34
hours of required courses within the two-dimensional
or three-dimensional studio major;
- 18
hours of studio art support;
- 12
hours of art history;
- necessary
hours of electives from within the School of
Art or college;
- 9
hours of academic electives.
OR
a digital arts major including:
- A
successful second portfolio review after
ARTC 201 (students must have a 3.0 GPA or
higher in digital arts classes and a 2.5
GPA in other art courses to submit a portfolio
review for digital arts);
- 30
hours of required courses within the digital
arts major (either animation, imaging or
interactive art);
- 21
hours of studio art support;
- 12
hours of art history;
- necessary
hours of electives from within the School
of Art or college;
- CS
101;
- 6
hours of academic electives.
OR
a graphic design major including:
- A
successful second portfolio review after
ARTD 202;
- 30
hours required courses within the graphic
design major;
- 21
hours of studio art support;
- 12
hours of art history;
- necessary
hours of electives from within the School
of Art or college;
- 9
hours of academic electives
OR
a major in art education including:
- 19
hours of 2D or 3D studio requirements;
- 9
hours of 2D or 3D studio support at 300
or 400 level;
- 18
hours of studio arts support;
- 12
hours of art history;
- 23
hours of art education requirements;
- 14
hours of other teacher education requirements.
To be admitted to the BFA in art education a
student must complete at least 45 hours at BGSU
(transfer students must have completed 15 of
the 45 at BGSU) with an overall GPA of 2.85.
Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA
of 2.85 for entrance into ARTE 252, ARTE 407,
ARTE 492/497. For licensure and certification,
students must successfully pass the Praxis test.
- Major
courses may not be taken "S/U."
Group
IEnglish composition
Completion of ENG 112 or demonstration by examination
of proficiency in written expression equivalent to
that attained by a student who completes ENG 112.
(A 3-hour penalty is imposed if ENG 112 is not completed
within the first 60 hours. A 4-hour penalty is imposed
if ENG 112 is completed after 90 hours.)
Group IIForeign languages
Each student is required to demonstrate a proficiency
in a language by one of the options listed below:
-
Completing
a two-year study of one language in high school;
-
Passing
a proficiency examination in the language on the
102 course level;
-
Having
graduated from a high school where all instruction
was conducted in a language other than English;
-
Having
completed one of the departmental options listed
below (8 hours minimum in same language area or
fewer by advance placement).
Chinese,
German, Japanese, Russian
Completion of CHIN 101 and 102; or GERM 101 and
102; or JAPN 101 or 102, or RUSN 101 and 102.
French,
Greek, Italian, Latin, Spanish
Completion of FREN 101 and 102; or GRK 101 and 102;
or ITAL 101 and 102; or LAT 101 and 102, or SPAN
101 and 102.
Group
IIIScience, mathematics, computer science
Each student must complete two courses from the
BG Perspective program including one course approved
for laboratory credit listed in the College
of Arts and Sciences Handbook.
Group IVSocial science
Each student must complete one course in addition
to the BG Perspective program. Courses approved
for social science credit are listed in the College
of Arts and Sciences Handbook.
Group VArts and humanities
In addition to the BG Perspective program, each
student is required to complete one course in literature
(American, English or foreign) and two additional
courses from the list of approved arts and humanities
Group V list of courses found in the College
of Arts and Sciences Handbook.
Note: Foreign language courses numbered 201, 202,
212 apply to Group II not Group V.
Students may count two required art history courses
from the major in this area. Approved courses are
listed in the College
of Arts and Sciences Handbook.
