Major—Option I: BGSU Athletic Training/Clinic Management Program ( SMRT Division)
The Athletic Training/Clinic Management major will prepare students to enter the athletic training profession. Athletic Training students in this undergraduate program are educated in all aspects of the professional practice of a certified athletic trainer (ATC). Through a combination of extensive classroom and clinical experiences in athletic training, this undergraduate program provides students the necessary competencies to challenge the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification Examination.

Due to the competitive admission criteria of the athletic training/clinical management program and the guidelines set by the NATA and The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), students must apply separately for admission into the BGSU Athletic Training/Clinic Management Program. Students are considered Pre-professional students as they enroll in the introductory courses and begin their directed observation of the athletic training program. The pre-professional phase is completed in their first three semesters on campus.

Students desiring admission to the Professional Phase of the Athletic Training/Clinic Management Program must meet the following requirements:

  6. Objective evaluations from certified staff include: Evaluation based on professionalism, work ethic, dependability, taping skills and techniques, injury evaluation and treatment progression, record keeping
  7. Personal interview with program selection committee upon request. Physical examination for health and the ability to perform athletic training duties is required. Required immunizations for the program include measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria and Hepatitis B. Documentation is required on the health exam of the previous immunizations. Technical standards must be read, understood and signed.

Retention Policy
After official acceptance into the Athletic Training/Clinic Management Program the athletic training student should make continued progress toward mastery of all competencies. To achieve this mastery, the following guidelines have been instituted:

  1. All students must maintain at least an overall grade point average of 2.5.

  4. All students must progress through the modules and competency matrix at a satisfactory rate. Each module is to be completed in specific semesters and is outlined in the course syllabi.
  5. All students must abide by all policies and procedures detailed in the BGSU Athletic Training Handbook.
  6. Mock written and oral examinations will be given at the end of each academic year to those students in the professional phase of the Athletic Training/Clinic Management Program. Students will be required to achieve a score of 40% for a Level 2 student, 50% for a Level 3 student and 60% for a Level 4 student.

Students who do not achieve this GPA requirement will not be permitted to start an internship, which will require them to stay an additional semester or semesters to improve their GPA.
  2. Achieve a minimum of a "C" or higher in all Athletic Training required courses. A grade of a "B" must be earned in SMD 202 and SMD 310.

  4. Completion of the Mock Oral/Practical/Written Examination that will be given in the student's junior and senior years.

Major—Option II: Sport Information Management
Students choose either of two emphases. Students who choose the sport information emphasis usually seek careers as sport journalists, sport information directors in intercollegiate athletic programs or athletic conference offices, or they work in public/community relations with professional teams.
