BGSU Recycling
"Green" Grass Roots
The roots of recycling at BGSU
The BGSU recycling program began in 1986 as a volunteer effort to collect aluminum cans. Constant support from interested students, academic departments, the university, and organizations assisted in expanding the program into a full scale operation accepting a wide variety of recyclables.  Since its creation, the BGSU Recycling Program has received numerous grants and awards to assist with its development.  Today the BGSU Recycling Program continues its full scale operation while incorporating sustainability projects to promote wise growth within the community.
Purpose
The main objective of the BGSU Recycling Program is to incorporate recycling into the daily activities of every student, faculty, staff member and guest of the University.  Our objective is to lead our community toward environmental literacy for future social change in their communities and professional lives.
Community
Numerous volunteer hours, pilot programs, and cooperative ventures were put in to the creation and expansion of the BGSU Recycling Program.  The program persevered through the efforts of many individuals, departments, and organizations.  A total of forty-three city, county, university, and non-profit groups have had a part in the success BGSU Recycling over the years.
Publicity
Education of the University community has been one of the major endeavors of the BGSU Recycling Program.  Hall director training, student orientation, campus displays, and in-class discussions have been a big part of the communication with students, faculty, and staff.  Grants have aided in expanding promotional material to newspapers and station signage.
Impact
The impact of BGSU Recycling on the BGSU community is undeniable.  Daily requests are received across campus for pick up of material and drop off of more recycling bins.  Ideally, this behavior will carry over into the everyday lives of the students, faculty, and staff when they are away from campus.
