JEAN-CLAUDE GUÉDON received his PhD in History of Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is presently Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Montreal. Professor Guédon is the founder of Surfaces, the first Canadian electronic scholarly journal still in existence, begun in 1991. His studies on the social and cultural effects of the Internet and the evolution of scholarly publishing in a digitized and networked context have led him to produce numerous papers on the subject and to present at conferences worldwide. He has worked with the Internet Society, several francophone organizations and with the Open Society Institute. Not only is he actively engaged in the open access movement within scholarly publishing, he is also involved in the promotion of open source software. He has been a member of various boards or steering committees, such as the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD), Canadian National Site Licensing Project (CNSLP), Electronic Information for Libraries (eIFL) and Open Source Initiative's (OSI) Information Sub-Board. He was one of the initial signatories of Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI).
