Hello, and welcome to Point of View! One of the most important parts of an enriching campus experience is the creation of
a dialogue between students and their University administration. Point of View was created with just this vision in mind.
Point of View is a wonderful new opportunity for BGSU students to communicate with me and discuss topics that we are mutually
interested in and concerned about on campus. It will be a monthly forum that will let us keep in touch on a variety of subjects.
Point of View responses
This site will feature a different topic each month. I will write a brief statement outlining my ideas and thoughts, and then
open the floor up to students’ questions about them. Their questions can be submitted directly to this site in the spaces below.
I look forward to hearing from, and communicating with students about these issues.
Current Topic: Students' Expectations for Faculty and Administrators
Among the most important parts of the college experience are the interactions you will have with the many different individuals
you will meet on campus during your years here. Bowling Green State University is an incredibly diverse environment, inclusive
of people from all backgrounds and locales, with a wonderfully rich mix of goals, talents and aspirations. It is from these
people that you can receive what one might call a “second education” – an opportunity to learn and discover not only in the
classroom, but in the world around you as you sit with, learn with, and speak with the people who make up the BGSU community.
And, while you will no doubt most commonly interact with your roommates, classmates, and fellow members of student organizations
or athletic teams, you are also continually in contact with our faculty and administrators. These people – whether through
actively teaching courses or seeing to the quality of our programs and services on campus – are a vital part not only of our
campus life, but also of your education. They are here to ensure that your experiences on campus are as challenging, as fascinating,
and as rewarding as they can possibly be. They certainly have expectations for your success here at the University, but they
also know that you have expectations of them as well. It is these expectations that I would like to briefly discuss with you,
and receive your input on.
What are students’ expectations of our faculty and administration? What do you believe an effective member of the faculty
or administration should accomplish over the course of a semester or a year? Regarding faculty – would you like the opportunity
to meet with them more frequently outside of class (and why)? Would you like to see different kinds of assignments? More humor?
In terms of our administrators, would you like them to be more visible and accessible to students? If so, for what purposes
– to speak with them about career opportunities or suggestions for the campus as a whole? Would you like to have more opportunities
to meet and ask questions of our administrative team, our cabinet, or me? If you could make recommendations to modify how
our University operates, what would they be?
Student input, not only regarding the work of our faculty and administrators, but also the overall workings of our institution,
is absolutely vital to how a university can grow, adapt and change. Your energy and brilliance fuels and gives purpose to
the work that we do as a whole. The questions I have outlined above are just examples – starting places – for this discussion.
What would you like to experience on campus, and what suggestions do you have for making those experiences a reality? I am
eagerly looking forward to hearing from you, and continuing to reach for our goals as a community of learners.
If you have suggestions for topics that you'd like to see Point of View cover in the future, feel free to submit them below.
I will try to accommodate as many requests as possible. Questions responded to on this site may be edited for grammar and
clarity.
