Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs
- Provided direction for development of thematically consistent student affairs web site.
Disability Services
- Presented a workshop for St. John's high school parents in Toledo.
First Year Experience
- Developed a First Year Experience brochure for prospective students, which highlights the various first year initiatives on campus. This brochure was distributed during the two Preview Day events this semester.
- Updated The First Year Experience curriculum guide in cooperation with the Office of Admissions. This guide is sent to all prospective students.
Recreational Sports
- Hosted various groups in the Recreation Center. These included, BGSU Diving (Swim and Dive) Camp, Columbus Master's Swim Meet, Scouts All-Nighter, Family outings, Wood County Hospital groups, Church youth groups, soccer groups, Cub Scout Pack merit badge activity, and Wood Lane Industries among others.
Student Life
- Collaborated with the Office of Admissions through the utilization of the Off-Campus Student Center as a tool in attracting more commuter students.
Student Publications
- Developed a brochure that focused on student-learning opportunities within Student Publications. It was circulated at Preview Days and was mailed as a recruitment piece to high school guidance counselors and English/journalism teachers. (It is also given to high school students who have individual tours of the School of Communication Studies.)
Student Union
- Coordinated space use with the Admissions office to insure the most efficient use on campus visit days.
The Center for Multicultural and Academic Initiatives
- Participated in bi-weekly and/or monthly presentations for the Office of Admissions to assist with recruitment.
- Worked with Cleveland, Detroit, Dayton and Texas high school students while they visited BGSU. In addition, staff members have visited and conducted presentations at various Toledo high schools.
- Presented information at Discovery Day, Hispanic Focus Day, and Preview Day.
- Recruited students who participated in the Pre-College Enrichment Program.

Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs
- Worked with the Vice President for University Advancement to more effectively coordinate and enhance Homecoming events.
- Established an all-university committee on alcohol issues, reporting to the President through the Vice President for Student Affairs.
- Provided review of institutional policies impacting students, such as security at campus events, space use, solicitation, and alcohol.
Career Services
- Implemented a new career education initiative, Great Expectations: What Can I Do With A Major in...?. Designed to help undecided students as well as students in declared majors in the College of Arts and Sciences obtain realistic information about occupational alternatives, the four sessions held in November were attended by more than 150 students. Program evaluations were overwhelmingly positive.
- Counseling Center
Conducted crises intervention (emergency appointments and visits to Wood County Hospital to assist in evaluation, referral and student support) - Provided individual, couples and group counseling (students at risk were provided more immediate service)
- Operated two psycho-educational groups: Growing Through Grief Group and Turning Points (seven session program for students with eating disorders)
- Introduced and facilitated groups in all sessions of the "Parents' Program: 'Education 101: Changing Relationships'" during the 1998 Orientation and Registration Program. This is a 75-minute program to acquaint parents with issues students may confront at BGSU and provide ideas about how parents can be of assistance.
- Collaborated with the Coalition Against Sexual Offenses (CASO), including training facilitators for "What Men Need to Know About Rape".
- Trained other University personnel to assist in early identification and referral of students with potentially debilitating problems. Presented workshops for Residence Life, Student Activities, Student Recreation Center, Campus Ministers, and Faculty Orientation.
- Conducted outreach programming for graduate students, First Year Student Orientation, Women's Health Fair, Interpersonal Communication Courses, Spring Freshman Orientation and Registration, and UNIV Success classes.
Disability Services
- Presented to graduate students during GCPDP on issues for students with disabilities.
First Year Experience
- Increased the number of classroom resources available to instructors of UNIV 100 by establishing a resource center in the FYE office.
- Increased the number of sections of UNIV 100 offered in Spring 1999 from one to three.
- Created three sections of the course that will be offered during the 1999 summer session.
- Offered the BG Effect Mentoring Program to students affiliated with the University Program for Academic Success and to all first semester commuter students.
- Expanded the second edition of FYI distributed in August 1998 from 36 pages to 56 pages.
- Coordinated a faculty/staff move-in crew in cooperation with the Office of Residence Life. Approximately 50 faculty and staff members volunteered on Saturday, August 22, 1998.
- Cooperated with the Office of Institutional Research to track first year students affiliated with a BGSU first year program and the impact on their retention rate.
- Explored second-year student transition issues, we plan to incorporate these issues into our second semester outreach to current first year students.
Health Services
- Developed a new eating disorders support group will meet during spring semester 1999.
- Organized a men's clinic that will start in spring semester, 1999. This clinic will focus on men's health needs, particularly sexual health and cardiovascular health.
- Moved to remodeled and expanded quarters for the Wellness Connection.
Office of Student Life
- Provided an enhanced Orientation program to assist students and their families with the adjustment to a new environment.
Created "The Colors of BG " which focused on the "core values" of the institution. - Conducted the student organizations' Fair during the second week of the semester to help students get connected with student life. This was the largest ever held and had displays by over 110 student organizations.
- Developed "Becoming a Piece of the Puzzle" a program that provided monthly workshops for organization leaders as well as special programs for advisors, presidents and treasurers.
Created a new office in the 450 Saddlemire and arrangements were made for extended hours of usage of this suite for the 22 organizations that are housed there. - Conducted over 100 programs, including campus films, comedians, talent search, Homecoming and the Parents/Family Weekend concert featuring the Manhattan Transfer, through the combined efforts of UAO, with over 100 members, 20 + multicultural student organizations and Student Activities.
- Provided parents with the information, through Parents' Services programs that will assist them in helping their students.
- Expanded hours of service in the Hazel H. Smith Off-Campus Student Center to better serve the needs of the students who use the center.
- Updated the computer lab in the Hazel H. Smith Off-Campus Student Center.
Recreational Sports
- Provided enrichment activities for students which included: Campus Brothers events, African Dance group Workshop, Dance Team sessions, BGSU Cheerleaders practice site, ROTC units for special activities, Alpine Ski Club fund raiser, Non-Traditional Student Association event, American Fitness and Aerobics Certification Workshop (principally for BGSU students), Alpha Phi philanthropy, Alpha Phi Omega philanthropy, Alpha Phi Omega event, Executive MBA event, Korean Martial Arts Club practice site.
Residence Life
- Created task forces, comprised of students and staff, to examine residence hall safety, the night guard program, and noise in the residence units.
- Conducted a large number of physical improvements in the residences, including painting, carpeting, and new room furniture in most sorority houses; select room painting in Offenhauer, Founders, and McDonald; and new or refinished lounge and study room furniture in most halls.
- Continued the use of "roommate contracts" as a means to encourage communication between roommates.
Introduced "community contracts" in the halls as a means to encourage students to discuss the type of living environment they wanted on their respective floors. - Created the "Leaders in Residence Program" for resident students who are interested in developing leadership skills and experiences. Thirty-eight students signed up for the program in the fall.
- Developed the "Faculty Plus Program", which places faculty members in the residence halls over the lunch hour to meet informally with interested students.
- Developed a student manager programs in Dining Services in which students gain valuable supervisory experience for future positions. They team together with the College of Family and Consumer Science to provide lab sites for food service management and dietetic majors. They provide College of Technology and College of Art majors, graphic intern positions. They have provided practicum and work experience for students majoring in numerous fields such as human resources and general business.
- Welcomed Sigma Lambda Gamma and Sigma Lambda Beta, the Latina sorority and Latino fraternity at BGSU. Sigma Lambda Gamma successfully petitioned the local NPHC for membership on the Council.
- Conducted the Emerging Leaders program, which brought over sixty young members of fraternities and sororities together for a weekend retreat. The retreat curriculum included team building, leadership development, decision- making skills, and conflict and confrontation. Six seasoned student leaders facilitate the retreat.
- Coordinated a Presidents' Summit for Greek chapter presidents and council executive officers. Cathy Earley, former Director of Leadership Education for the National Interfraternity Conference, developed a curriculum focused on creating positive change within fraternities and sororities.
Student Publications
- Chartered a new student chapter of The Society of News Design, which we hope will appeal across academic lines and attract journalism, design and VCT students as members;
Student Union
- Expanded student meal plan utilization during the lunch meal hours.
- Identified suitable space to use for Union services during the renovation of the current facility.
The Center for Multicultural and Academic Initiatives
- Sponsored a Multicultural Freshman Orientation and Unity Luncheon to assist new students in making the transition to college life. Over 190 students, parents, faculty, and staff attended the successful event.
- Presented 35 Multicultural Affairs Awards for Academic Excellence to students.
- Established a partnership with Enterprise Rent-a-Car. The car rental awarded four (4) students each with $125 book certificates Fall semester.
- Provided 50 book loans to students who were not able to purchase their books at the start of Fall semester.
- Conducted more than 15 Diversity Training Workshops for students, faculty, and staff.
- Provided academic advising to students to help insure their success at BGSU. Mid-term evaluations were sent to all participants to ascertain students' progress.
- Tutored students who needed supplemental assistance.
Advised students and conducted workshops regarding financial aid. - Encouraged students to participate in the First Year Programs such as University Program for Academic Success, Springboard, Honors and President Leadership Academy.
- Developed and disseminated a resource guide to all minority students to help connect them to the University and larger community. Faculty and staff also received a copy.
- Conducted monthly lecture series to address racial and ethnic issues in BG as well as in society.
- Coordinated the Kwanzaa celebration December 11, 1998.
Co-sponsored events during Hispanic Heritage month including: MacArthur Fellows, Cuban Arts Conference and the Nuyorican Poets.
Priority #3: Faculty and Staff Compensation

First Year Experience
- Continued to investigate the opportunity to provide compensation for UNIV 100 instructors. Information has been gathered from institutions similar to BGSU and work is in progress with the Administrative Staff Teaching Compensation Review Committee.

- Conducted graduate student orientation program in September for graduate students new to the Division of Student Affairs.
Counseling Center
- Provided Training Seminar for Graduate Assistants from the Clinical Psychology Training Program in the Department of Psychology throughout the semester. (Topics: Dysfunctional Families by Clark; Counseling Center Orientation, Crises Intervention, Suicide Intervention and Diagnosis/Case Conceptualization by Yarris; and Issues in Counseling Sexual Minorities by Burke)
Priority #5: Professional Training and Development Programs
Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs
- Implemented Division-wide staff development program which included: Orientation for new employees, performance counseling, managing conflict in the workplace, giving effective presentations, and grant writing.
Career Services
- Sponsored bi-weekly professional development programs for departmental staff that focuses on systems thinking, communication/listening skills, and use of various applications programs. JoAnn Kroll designed an assessment to identify Division employees' perception of their training and development needs. Data from this needs assessment will be used by the Staff Development Committee for program planning purposes.
Counseling Center
- Accepted by the Board of Psychology for the State of Ohio as providers of Continuing Education Units for Psychologists.
- Offered staff development programs this semester from Academic Enhancement, Disability Services, and the Women's Center. A joint meeting with staff in the Student Health Service also occurred in which treatment issues of common interest were discussed.
- Staff attended several local, regional, and national conferences.
Disability Services
- Attended the grant-writing workshop sponsored by SPAR as well as several programs sponsored by Information and Technology Services.
- Participated on the Rehabilitation Counseling Program Advisory Board and the Graduation Connections Partnership Initiative.
- Attended the Ohio Link conference on accessible technology.
First Year Experience
- Planned a series of professional development programs focusing on first year students that will be made available to the BGSU community. The first workshop will take place on February 19, 1999.
- Created a newsletter, to be distributed in February, specifically for faculty and staff members that will highlight first year student issues.
Office of Student Life
- Facilitated programs for the entire staff as well as individual programs based on results of staff surveys regarding professional development needs. All-staff programs included a two-part class (total of four hours) on Power Point, and informational sessions by the directors of Springboard and the President's Leadership Academy.
- Staff participated at the regional conference of NACA, the national conference of National Orientation Directors Association, Ohio Student Personnel Association, Ohio College Personnel Association, and Cleveland State Diversity Conference.
- Staff attended off-campus workshops on "Excelling as a First Time Supervisor" and "Basic Budget Management."
- Staff participated in on-campus programs on "Desktop Publishing for Employees," "Giving Effective Presentations," "Sexual Harassment Workshop," "Managing Conflict," and "Customer Service Training."
Recreational Sports
- Conducted brief "exercises" in most staff meetings with reviews of priorities expressed for the University, Student Affairs, and our own department.
Residence Life
- Provided funds for staff to attend Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Officers (GLACUHO), National Conference on Living Learning Programs, Special Interest Groups in University Computer Center Services, MMOGISP, and Association of Fraternity Advisors (AFA) Conferences.
- Developed and implemented a staff development programs for hall and house staff on action plan development, diversity, alcohol education and assessment on campus, creating change, fraternity expansion and the role of the host institution, risk management and liability, and organizational cultures.
- Amended job expectations so full-time hall staff are now required to chair a departmental committee.
- Hired SST Communications, a theater company based in Chicago, Illinois to present a training program on customer service to all Dining Services staff.
- Designed several departmental training programs and workshops in Dining Services, to promote high quality standards among their staff. These sessions are for all management, classified staff, students and other temporary staff. The sessions include customer service, sanitation and safety, student manager training, student cook training, cashier training, cook training, food service worker training, and we are now developing a catering workshop.
- Presented monthly OSHA training sessions monthly to the Dining Services staff.
- Collaborated with Behavioral Connections, Woodlane, and Occupational Work Adjustment (OWA) to provide training sites for several alternate work force groups. Our staff team together with staff members from the organization to provide training to prepare participants to enter the work force as productive employees.
- Staff attended the following conferences: National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Region IV-E New Professionals Institute; Midwest Meeting of Graduate Students in Student Personnel (MMOGSISP); Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Officers (GLACUHO); and the Association of Fraternity Advisors/National Interfraternity Conference Annual Meeting
Student Health Service
- Sponsored a videoconference on campus alcohol and violence.
Student Publications
- Developed an orientation/organizational manual for Student Publications and used a day-long area-wide retreat in August to circulate and discuss it;
- Attended a day-long national teleconference in Toledo featuring "How to Team Up for Success Wherever You Live and Work," this year's leadership development program presented in the Worldwide Lessons in Leadership Series
Student Union
- Provided diversity training for the Union staff.
Priority # 6: Assessment of academic and non-academic programs

- Coordinated program reviews for selected departments.
Career Services
- Completed a self-study as part of the program review process for this non-academic unit.
Counseling Center
- Conducted a student survey for those utilizing the Counseling Center services to solicit feedback on service delivery and recommendations for improvement. That survey was collected from 11/30/98 through 12/11/98. From a cursory look at the responses of approximately 60 returns, our services and delivery are receiving high satisfaction ratings.
- Evaluated the Counseling Center operations according to the guidelines of the International Association of Counseling Services in an effort to prepare for our program evaluation in year 1999-2000. As this year progresses, work will be done to implement any changes necessary to bring operations into compliance with those guidelines.
Disability Services
- Conducted self-study and external program review.
First Year Experience
- Established an end of the semester evaluation tool for all UNIV 100 classes, and a mid-semester assessment process was established for the newly created theme sections of the course.
Developed an evaluation too for BG Effect and was distributed to all students and mentors participating in the program.
Office of Student Life
- Asked students and family members to evaluate O-Reg and Welcome Week events and programs.
- Surveyed those attending the Off-Campus Housing Fair about the services of the Off-Campus Housing Office.
- Collected detailed demographic information on students who have gone through the judicial process so that we have information that will assist us in planning pro-active programs to target suspect populations.
- Questioned Parents Association members as to their impressions of what is being done in Parents Services and what they would like to see during the remainder of the year.
- Surveyed student groups eliciting suggestions for a newly structured S.O.L.D. in anticipation of the hiring of a Coordinator of Leadership Development and Community Services.
Recreational Sports
- Completed the internal self-study component of program review and is awaiting the arrangements for external reviewers to visit with us. Most likely, this will occur in the first 1/3 of Spring Semester.
Residence Life
- Charged a committee to develop a long-term plan for residential learning communities at BGSU.
- Formed a staff committee to evaluate all existing procedures and services. A Professional Practices" Manual has been obtained from NACUFS. Departmental policies, procedures and services are being reviewed for compliance.
- Restructured the University Dining Services Advisory Board to provide increased feedback from all constituencies. The board will have representation from RSA, USG, GSS, Faculty Senate, Administrative Staff and Classified Staff Councils, and "at large" undergraduate and graduate students.
- Greek Affairs is working with the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity to conduct the Greek Experience Survey at Bowling Green State University.
Student Health Service
- Started keeping track this year of alcohol related student visits to the Student Health Service and to the Wood County Hospital emergency department. This will help assess campus alcohol policies.
