Public Service Initiatives
- A Teen Center has been created in Bowling Green, the result of a study conducted by the BGSU Institute for Child and Family
Policy in response to the city’s concerns about the need for a better after-school environment for students between 10- and
14-years old. The successful collaborative effort was the focus of the Oct. 11, 2007 Community Collaboration Day event.
- BGSU Homecoming festivities receive tremendous support from the City of Bowling Green, the merchants and community members.
A downtown banner is permitted to hang across Main Street and businesses display the Homecoming posters. City representatives
are part of the BGSU Homecoming Steering Committee.
- A partnership between WBGU-FM and the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce has added popular, local radio host Dave Horger to
the staff of WBGU-FM, where he provides a Bowling Green newscast featuring local news, sports, weather, interviews and more.
- Six teens from Bowling Green City Schools were part of the Global Youth Parliament–a BGSU initiative organized by Dr. Sharon
Subreenduth that allowed them to network and collaborate with youth from South Africa and local teachers about issues affecting
youths.
- Wood County Corps, which is part of the AmeriCorps initiative, is a partnership between BGSU and the United Way Office in
Bowling Green. Many corps members are also BGSU students or recent graduates, and have pledged to get things done in the community,
including work at the new Teen Center, Children’s Resource Center, Wood County Committee on Aging and the park district in
Bowling Green.
- Members of the Latino Student Union help each year with the city’s Cinco de Mayo festivities, including activities during
the day for families and a dance in the evening that helps raise scholarship funds for Latino students.
- With recent publicity about domestic violence issues in the region, BGSU was host to the Silent Witness Project, the local
observance of domestic violence awareness month.
