Great Ideas: Questions & Answers

Posted: September 2009

  1. Seek more faculty and student-body diversity in programs and, in the College of Musical Arts, in music and marching band styles.
  2. Bring the Stanley Cup to BGSU
  3. Make name and email address optional when submitting a Great Idea
  4. Blow our own horn, including about the BGSU connection to the Stanley Cup
    1. A writer suggested more diversity among faculty and students in all programs and, in the College of Musical Arts, in music and marching band styles.

Diversity is an important theme for the College of Musical Arts, which approaches it in a number of ways, including an undergraduate world music degree program, four world music ensembles, a master’s degree program in ethnomusicology, diverse guest artists, travel grants for music students, scholarships for entering students from underrepresented groups, and faculty searches aimed at attracting a diverse applicant pool. The Falcon Marching Band performs different marching styles and halftime shows—which are taught because many of the band members are music education majors whose marching band experience is an important part of their education as future music teachers.

    2. To promote the Falcon hockey program, BGSU should ask the National Hockey League to allow a campus visit by the Stanley Cup. The writer making the recommendation said it could be a community event, with invitations also extended to hockey alumni who went on to the NHL and/or Stanley Cup titles, including Dan Bylsma, coach of the reigning champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

BGSU has been submitted as a potential stop for the Cup through a reservation process.

    3. Required submission of name and email address when making a Great Ideas suggestion was questioned by a writer, who asked if that information could be optional in case the contributor wants to be notified.

Leaving a name and email address will now be an option on the Great Ideas site. The information was requested in the past so individuals could be contacted with additional questions. Contributors may remain anonymous now.
    4. A campus writer urged BGSU to blow its own horn about, among other things, a Falcon hockey alumnus (Dan Bylsma) coaching the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Stanley Cup championship.

An article about the Stanley Cup connection was posted on the BGSU Athletics Web site, and Falcon hockey staff has been using it in recruiting. Also, BGSU is attempting to bring the Cup to campus this winter through a reservation process.
