- Offer online master’s of education core classes
- Consider a buyout for staff
- Pointing out that public school teachers are required to pursue their master’s degrees, a writer recommended that BGSU take advantage of the opportunity this creates by offering online courses in the core required subjects such as educational research and statistics. These could be packaged, with perhaps a tuition incentive for taking three courses. To accommodate the large number of students this could draw, it was also suggested that online faculty be provided a strong graduate assistant. To implement these courses would require some investment by the University for the additional faculty needed.
This suggestion reflects BGSU’s commitment to the common goal of addressing the needs of Ohio’s citizens and its teachers. And from the University’s standpoint, a healthy, revenue-generating online master’s of education program would benefit everyone, in every college, in every office. Everyone in Academic Affairs welcomes the opportunity to explore with you and other College of Education and Human Development faculty and administrators any fruitful, collegial, collaborative ways to launch these programs, to make them sustainable, and, most of all, to increase the number of successful BGSU alumni regionally, nationally and around the world. - A writer asked if the University has considered offering a buyout for staff.
This has been frequently asked, and such an Early Retirement Incentive Plan has been considered, but the University would not save the money necessary to meet its budget targets within the necessary time frames. As the detailed scenario we provided to you demonstrates, when all the factors are taken into account, the equation does not come out in the University’s favor.
