How can PCA help you?

Participatory Action Research:

PCA provides consultation to individuals and groups interested in Participatory Action Research (PAR).  The type of information we will provide will be determined by the project and individuals' needs.  We offer assistance to all members of our campus and broader community including undergraduate and graduate students.

The philosophy and practices of PAR undergird the activities and grants that we offer. We believe that all members of a community have the desire and ability to inquire, evaluate, and take action to better their life circumstances.  PAR engages those close to the problem in defining issues, gathering and analyzing data, and determining recommendations.  PAR should result in direct and immediate benefit to all members of a community.  PAR leads to greater awareness and commitment to a more just society through research, education, and action.

Grant Funding- Two Programs:

The PCA/CITE Partnership Support Grant Program:

PCA, in conjunction with CITE, offers Partnership Support Grants up to $5,000 to new or continuing partnerships between members of BGSU and the broader community based on reciprocity, co-equal participation, and mutual benefit.  Partnerships should combine University and community knowledge, interests, and resources to address problems, issues, needs, and themes rooted in the community but significant to both groups.

            The PCA/CITE Dissemination Grant Program:

PCA, in conjunction with CITE, provides Dissemination Grants up to $5,000 for current or past campus-community partnerships.  Grant funds may be used to explore and address how best to articulate and share knowledge arising from partnerships to create significant impact and further the collaborative process.  Dissemination Grant projects should develop ways to systematically return knowledge to all members of a community.

Partnership Development:

PCA shares its strong network of contacts both on-campus and in the community with individuals and organizations intent on developing reciprocal and mutually beneficial partnerships in all areas of campus and community life.

Grant Development:

PCA Grant Coordinators provide support in identifying sources of funding for campus and community individuals and agencies.  We also consult on proposed or pending applications that involve partnership activity.

Professional Development:

PCA sponsors professional development opportunities for students, faculty, K-12 faculty, and community partners. We provide student internships, practicums, and workshops to enhance skills in grant writing, partnership development, and community-based research.

Special Events and Residences:

PCA sponsors a wide variety of special events that focus on issues of equity within a democratic society.  Renowned educators, artists, musicians, and dance and theatre troupes are invited to be in residence and conduct workshops and symposia.  Past events have included Voices of Africa, Ulali, Dancing Wheels, and Theater for Community Action.  Examples of symposia have been "Forging New Relationships:  Higher Education Partnering with Indigenous Populations," "Reclaiming Public Education," "Partnerships on the Move:  Creating Environments of Inclusion," and "Common Interests/Shared Efforts:  A Workshop on Participatory Action Research Tools and Skills."
