 I HAVE A NON-TENURE TRACK APPOINTMENT AT BGSU. AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR RIG FUNDING?
No. The FRC-RIG opportunity is open to all BGSU tenured and tenure-track faculty members. Non-tenure track faculty, adjunct faculty, lecturers and instructors are not eligible to apply.

I'M A JUNIOR FACULTY MEMBER. WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
A primary purpose of the program is to provide initial seed funds for new researchers who are establishing their individual research agendas. 

I AM AN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR. CAN I APPLY?
Yes. The RIG offers funding opportunities to faculty researchers with strong, established research records who are expanding their current programs in substantially new directions. Tenured faculty may apply for the RIG if they are taking their research in a new direction.

IS THIS A "GRANT TO WRITE A GRANT"?
No, this is not a grant to write a grant. The RIG is intended to support ongoing research projects that already have resulted in the submission of external grant proposals.

I HEARD I NEED TO SUBMIT AN EXTERNAL GRANT PROPOSAL BEFORE I CAN RECEIVE A RIG AWARD. IS THIS TRUE?
Yes, this is true. The submission of an external grant proposal is a prerequisite for the receipt of FRC-RIG funding. Such proposals may be either NEW or COMPETING renewals. 

WHEN DID OR DO THE EXTERNAL GRANT PROPOSALS NEED TO BE SUBMITTED?
Such grant proposals requesting no less than $25,000 must have been routed and submitted through OSPR during the 18-month period of January 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008, to an external agency. If this timeframe does not fit realistically within the level of advancement of your research agenda, then planning ahead for the next round of funding or seeking funding under other FRC programs may be more appropriate. 

ARE THERE EXCEPTIONS TO THE $25,000 LIMIT?
Exceptions to this minimum dollar amount can be made in those disciplinary areas where granting agency awards are commonly of smaller dollar amounts.

DO I NEED TO BE THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR ON THE EXTERNAL GRANT? I'VE BEEN THE CO-I ON GRANTS BEFORE.
The applicant must be the Principal Investigator of the external grant proposal submitted through the OSPR Office.  Co-Investigator status may be acceptable when a clearly defined, separate project is embedded in a larger, interdisciplinary proposal.

WHAT IF I’M THE PI ON A SUBAWARD TO BGSU FROM ANOTHER UNIVERSITY’S EXTERNAL GRANT? DOES THAT QUALIFY?
Yes, this would satisfy the PI requirement, as long as the other requirements are also met—i.e., grant proposals requesting no less than $25,000 must have been routed and submitted through OSPR during the 18-month period of January 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009.

HOW MUCH IS THE AWARD?
You may request up to $10,000. In addition, FRC-RIG applications that document meaningful roles for undergraduate students will be considered for an additional $1,000 - $1,500, all of which must be expended in support of students.

WHAT CAN THE FUNDING BE USED FOR?
FRC-RIG funds may be used for a variety of purposes that support and expand the research activities of the principal investigator (PI).  These may include but are not limited to: purchase of equipment and supplies needed to support/expand the research; hiring of support personnel; summer salary for the PI; support for graduate assistants; travel to meet with program officers from funding agencies, etc.

CAN RIG FUNDS BE USED FOR SUPPLEMENTAL PAY OR COURSE OVERLOADS?
NO. Program funds may not be used for supplemental or overload payments during the academic year or summer. 

WHAT SORT OF ACTIVITIES ARE SUPPORTED WITH RIG FUNDING?
RIG funding is intended to support scholarly research activities. While this could potentially encompass a broad range of activities, there are some specific activities that are excluded from consideration:

• preparation of textbooks, works, or materials based on research already completed

• preparation of works not based on research and intended for general audiences

• preparation of materials for which advances have been received (it is assumed that most of the research portion would have been completed)

• development of instruction or public service programs (while important, these are not the focus of the FRC)

• construction of physical facilities

• travel to conferences and/or meetings solely to present papers, publications, or research (travel may be allowable within the context of a particular research project)

 WILL OSPR STAFF HELP ME PREPARE THE RIG BUDGET AND PROPOSAL?
Of course. Faculty members interested in applying for FRC Research Incentive Grants are strongly encouraged to consult with Sponsored Programs and Research staff members early in the process.  Staff may assist you in the following ways: identifying external funding programs for your research projects; obtaining application materials and budget estimates for the external grant; and developing the budget for your FRC Research Incentive Grant application.

IS COST-SHARE OR MATCHING REQUIRED?
While such a cost-share is not required for a RIG application, it will enhance its probability of funding. Recognizing that successful faculty research often requires the support of the home department, the FRC solicits the commitment of departmental cost-sharing support as an endorsement of a RIG application.  These cost-sharing commitments may take the form of either cash or in-kind contributions: i.e. faculty time, departmental graduate assistant, travel funds, supply funds, and equipment purchases. 

IS THERE A LIMIT TO HOW MANY TIMES I MAY RECEIVE A RIG?
Yes, there is a limit. Faculty members who have received two previous RIG awards within the past three academic years are not eligible to apply in this round. 

CAN I RECEIVE RIG FUNDING IF I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN AWARDED OTHER FRC FUNDING?
Yes, but there are some limitations. A faculty member may receive no more than two awards from any combination of FRC programs within a given fiscal year, and no more than one award in any single FRC program during a given fiscal year.

NO.
