Web-based training is required for all researchers using vertebrate animals.  The training is located on the University's Blackboard system.  As a result, you must have (and be using) a BGNET account to access the training.  Once your training has been completed, please send an e-mail to hsrb@bgnet.bgsu.edu so that the completion of training can be properly logged.

Here are the steps (there are 12 of them) for accessing the IACUC training on the University's Blackboard system.

Note: if you do not go through at least step 9 you will not be able to access the exam that must be successfully completed in order to get "credit" for taking the training.

  1. Log into the MYBGSU web portal
  2. Click on the "Community" tab
  3. Click on the "Browse Organization Catalog" link
  4. Enter "animal care and use" into the search criteria box (without the quotes):

Name box

  1. Click the "go" button
  2. You should see an entry for "Human Subjects and Animal Care and Use Training" :

Organization Name

  1. Click the "Enroll" button to the far right of the entry:

Enroll Button

NOTE - IF YOU DO NOT CLICK THE "ENROLL" BUTTON YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE EXAMS EVEN THOUGH YOU WILL BE ABLE TO VIEW THE POWERPOINT SLIDESHOWS.

  1. The system will display the self enrollment screen, where you can confirm your enrollment.
  2. Click the "Submit" button to complete your enrollment.  The system will display the enrollment confirmation screen.
  3. Click the "OK" button.  The system will display the Documents area of the organization.
  4. Click on the "IACUC Training Materials" link.
  5. Click the link for the specific training session you wish to complete (see "What sessions do I have to take?" below). This will start the PowerPoint slideshow.
If you have any problems enrolling or accessing the training, please contact Rich Rowlands at (419) 372-7716 or hsrb@bgsu.edu

What sessions do I have to take?
**As of February 18, 2005, the IACUC has mandated that all researchers listed on a BGSU protocol complete the relevant web-based training session(s) as indicated on the current protocol, annual renewal, and personnel addition forms.  No new submissions (i.e., protocols, annual renewals and personnel additions) will be reviewed unless all researchers on the protocol have completed the relevant web-based training session(s).

The requirements are listed below:

  • BGSU's Animal User Training Session I (consists of four sections and a 15 question exam)   - this session must be successfully completed by all researchers
  • BGSU's Animal User Training Session II (consists of four sections and a 25 question exam)  - this session must be successfully completed by all researchers performing more than behavioral observations in naturalistic settings, basic animal handling, or animal husbandry
  • BGSU's Animal User Training Session III (consists of four sections and a 20 question exam) - this session must be successfully completed by all researchers who will be performing surgery (survival or non-survival), anesthesia, perfusions or euthanasia

Who do I contact if I have questions or problems with the training sessions?

  • If you have a structural question about the web site itself, please contact Rich Rowlands at (419) 372-7716 or hsrb@bgnet.bgsu.edu
  • If you have a content question about information in the web site or aren't sure which session(s) you should complete, please contact Denise Hook at (419) 372-8753 or dpax@bgnet.bgsu.edu
