Position Summary
TRIO| Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federally funded program designed to identify and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The purpose of the program is to provide academic, career, and financial counseling to students and encourages participants to graduate from high school and continue to the postsecondary institutions of their choice.

As an integral member of the TRIO Programs department, the Academic Coordinator provides outreach activities to assist in the recruitment of students in grades 6-8 within the target Toledo Public School Community Schools.   The Academic Coordinator will coordinate educational purposeful workshops as related to the goals and objectives of the BGSU federal grant and in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education federal regulations. This position will work cooperatively with other TRIO program staff, TPS personnel and community partners.

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

Outreach
• Implement outreach activities to identify, select and screen program participants from the Toledo Public School system-grades 6-8
• Plan activities to educate target school personnel about the ETS program
• Develop relationships with community based organizations
• Track students’ progress

Programming/Service Delivery
• Provide academic and career support services to students with an interest in attending college
• Direct students to appropriate academic and supportive services
• Conduct workshops for program participants
• Evaluate all ETS activities

Administration
• Identify selected students’ needs  
• Coordinate and provide follow-up for program participants
• Participate in target school meetings and/or other relevant meetings
• Assist in all project activities
• Attend in-service and other professional development opportunities as approved of the Assistant Director
• Establish positive relationships with TPS school personnel, community based organizations/agencies and the target community
• Maintain student records

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
Knowledge of community resources within the target area that addresses the needs of the population
Knowledge of postsecondary education programs and financial aid procedures
Knowledge of the academic requirements for the pre-college population
Demonstrated working knowledge in servicing students who come from low-income and first-generation backgrounds
Ability to foster internal/external-working relationships to ensure cooperative referrals
Knowledge of Ohio high school graduation requirements and postsecondary admission requirements
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to contribute to a positive experience for students and assists in achieving the university’s core values

Minimum Qualifications
Associates Degree in Education, Social Services or related field required. Bachelor’s degree highly preferred.  Also required one to two years experience working with TRIO or other educational outreach programs. Preference will be given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming circumstances similar to those of the target population.

Pre-Employment Background Check
Final candidate(s) are required to authorize and pass a background investigation prior to an offer of employment.  Offers of employment are conditional until a background investigation has been successfully completed and all other pre-employment requirements are satisfied.  The University reserves the right to determine and confirm suitability for employment and to end any employment already begun if the background check reveals disqualifying information.  

Salary
This is a grant funded, permanent, full-time, 217/day, administrative staff position. .  Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Administrative pay grade350. Full benefits package available.
