Classified Staff Employment & Selection Process Information

REQUIREMENTS ON HOW TO APPLY FOR CLASSIFIED JOB OPENINGS:
Effective August 15, 2011, applicants that wish to apply to a classified staff job opening may submit a cover letter, resume and contact information for 3 professional references in lieu of a Classified Application.  Applicants will now be required to submit new materials for each position to which they apply.  Human Resources will no longer keep applications on file for a year.

Completing an Employment Application
If applicant does not have a cover letter and resume, an employment application may be completed.  Applicants may obtain an employment application during business hours Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm) in the Office of Human Resources, 1851 N. Research Drive, Bowling Green, OH  43403 or online.  Information and applications are available at the following links:

Information contained on the application will be used in determining those who will be interviewed. Therefore, when completing an application for employment, be as detailed as possible regarding work experience, training and education. Resumes may be included.

Selection Process
Classified Staff positions are offered to BGSU employees first.  If a selection cannot be made from qualified University employees, recruitment will open to the public.

Classified positions open to the public are advertised on the Office of Human Resources web site, posted in local and/or regional newspapers/web sites and on the Classified Staff Job Line (419-372-2669).

Individuals applying for positions must submit cover letter, resume and contact information of three professional references or an employment application before the posted deadline. Deadlines are stated on the Position Vacancy Announcement and Job Line. Position Vacancy Announcements are available in the Office of Human Resources and on the Office of Human Resources web site.

Human Resources does not pull applications for current vacant positions, it is up to the applicant to submit new materials for current vacancies. All applicants must meet the minimum qualifications specific to the position in order to apply.

Classified Staff Job Line
Current job openings open to the public are listed on the Job Line (419-372-8669). The Job Line will indicate a brief description, rate of pay and deadline for each listing.

Pre-employment Background Check Requirement
Final candidate(s) are required to authorize and pass a background investigation prior to an offer of employment.  Offers of employment are conditional until a background investigation has been successfully completed and all other pre-employment requirements are satisfied.  The University reserves the right to determine and confirm suitability for employment and to end any employment already begun if the background check reveals disqualifying information.  

Driving Insurability/Drug Testing
Some positions may require a post-offer/pre-employment driver insurability check or drug and alcohol testing. For positions that require driving a University vehicle, individuals must be insurable with the University insurance carrier. Drug and alcohol testing may be required to ensure health and capability to perform required tasks of the job.

Mandatory Direct Deposit
As a condition of employment, all applicants who accept a position must have a checking or savings account with a federally-insured financial institution so that paychecks can be directly deposited.

Immigration and Naturalization
Bowling Green State University only hires individuals authorized to work in the United States of America. New employees must present documentation to establish both employment authorization and identity within three days of their date of hire. If an employee must secure the proper documentation, he/she must present receipts and has 90 days from date of hire to produce the required documents.

Political Activity
Classified staff members are prohibited by Section 124.57 of the Ohio Revised Code, from engaging in partisan political activity. "Political activity" and "politics" refer to partisan activities, campaigns, and elections involving primaries, partisan ballots and partisan candidates.

Full-time, Nine-month, Part-time, Temporary/Intermittent Positions

Full-time:
12-month, full-time            position with a 40-hr. per week work schedule over a 12-month period.  
                                              Full benefit package available.

9-month, full-time              position with a 40-hr. per week work schedule over a 9-month period 
                                              (usually academic year, mid-August to mid-May).  
                                              Employee is furloughed over academic breaks and summer.  
                                              Full benefit package is available.

Part-time:
12-month, part-time          position with a 30-hour per week or less work week over a 12-month period.  
                                              Sick leave and vacation hours are accrued but insurances are not available.

9-month, part-time            position with a 30-hour per week or less work week over a 9-month period 
                                              (usually academic year, mid-August to mid-May).  
                                              Employee is furloughed over academic breaks and summer.  
                                              Sick leave is accrued but vacation and insurances are not available.

Temporary:                        an employee whose regular hours of work do not exceed 40 hours per week for a 
                                              limited or period of time not to exceed one academic term, or 119 consecutive days, 
                                              whichever is greater.

On-call/Intermittent:        an employee who works an irregular schedule as needed or during peak periods 
                                             during the year and whose hours do not exceed 30 during week worked. 
                                             Total hours cannot exceed 1000 in a calendar year.

Administrative Staff Positions
Administrative Staff (salaried) positions are advertised for recruitment through the Administrative Staff Job Line (419-372-8522), Human Resources web site and local and/or regional publications. The Administrative Staff Job line is updated weekly.  Credential packets are submitted for these positions.
