  • Why am I required to attend Opening Weekend?
    Opening Weekend is an opportunity for new first-year students living on-campus and commuting to BGSU an opportunity to continue exploring campus after their Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) visit and become better acquainted with their new home and campus family. It is an introduction to your first semester at BGSU, including a review of academic expectations, what it means to be academically successful, and an introduction to the resources and tools you need to be aware of during your time at BGSU. It is also an opportunity to build school spirit and excitement by providing you the opportunity to become better acquainted with your new home and campus family. Research shows that students who participate in transitional programs such as Opening Weekend are more successful during their first year of college. You don’t want to miss out!
  • Is there any cost for Opening Weekend?
    No. There is no additional cost for Opening Weekend events.
  • I am commuting to campus, what do I need to know?
    Opening Weekend is required for students commuting to campus too. You will have an opportunity to connect with peers and upper class students who also commute to BGSU while learning about additional commuter and off-campus resources.
  • Do parents and family members attend any part of Opening Weekend?
    There are no Opening Weekend events for family members. Opening Weekend events begin on Friday night around 7 p.m. with other new students. Your family members are welcome to help you move-in and hang-out with you until our events begin at that time.
  • What if I cannot move-in on Friday?
    You are encouraged to make every effort to move-in on Friday, but if you are not able to do so, check-in at the front desk of your residence hall upon arriving. The staff will help get you caught up with the schedule of the weekend.
  • What is an Opening Weekend Group Leader?
    An Opening Weekend Group Leader, OWGL for short, is an upper-class student leader dedicated to helping first-year students transition to Bowling Green State University. Assigned by Residence Halls, each student has an OWGL to help guide him/her throughout the weekend. OWGLs serve as a mentor to students throughout the school year too.
  • With all of these events happening during Opening Weekend, when will I have time to settle in?
    Opening Weekend events do not begin until approximately 7p.m. on Friday, giving you all day to get settled. On Sunday, events end around 2 p.m., allowing time to prepare for your first day of class. Opening Weekend is packed with events for a reason. You will only have one Opening Weekend as a first-year student; take advantage of it! The weekend may seem packed but you don’t want to miss out on the opportunities offered.
