Achievement, excellence spotlighted at awards dinner

It was a grand night for celebrating faculty at the awards dinner yesterday (March 22). From the Master Teacher to the service-learning office, seven faculty and one unit were lauded for excellence. In addition, others who have been recognized throughout the year were once again commended.

Those honored and their awards were:

• Dean Richard Kennell, College of Musical Arts, Lifetime Achievement Recognition
• Dr. Vivian (Vicki) Patraka, director of the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society, Faculty Distinguished Service Award
• Dr. Donald McQuarie, director of the American Culture Studies Program, Recognition for Chair/School/Director Leadership
• Dr. Laura Leventhal, computer science, Faculty Mentor Recognition
• Dr. Mary Murray, intervention services, Community Involvement Award
• Dr. Ronny Woodruff, biological sciences, Elliott L. Blinn Award for Faculty-Undergraduate Student Innovative Basic Research/Creative Work
• Office of Service-Learning, Unit Recognition Award

Prospective teachers get
interview practice

Education students preparing to enter the job market can gain valuable practice at the Interview Simulation Experience session tomorrow (Wednesday, March 24) from 4:30-6 p.m. in 201 Bowen Thompson Student Union.

During the interview simulation, students will have the opportunity to observe a mini-mock interview in which local school administrators ask typical teacher-interview questions to several student volunteers. At the conclusion of each student's interview, the employers (and audience members) will provide constructive feedback. The school administrators will also field general questions about the teacher interviewing and hiring process.

of questions.

Libbey Inc. CEO next speaker in Centennial Lecture Series

The chair and chief executive officer of North America's largest producer of glass tableware is the featured speaker at the College of Business Administration's Centennial Lecture. The talk will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

John Meier earned his MBA in 1970 from BGSU. He took over the leadership of Libbey when the company went public and separated from Owens-Illinois in 1993. He has been named one of BGSU's "Most Prominent Alumni" and was the speaker during fall commencement ceremonies in December.

Meier will present "The Road to Tomorrow," which addresses the challenges and opportunities for businesses in this tough economy, as well as the lessons to be learned from the stock market collapse and the "new normal" for businesses as they move forward.

Meier will also discuss Libbey's plans for the future in a fragile world economy. He has led the charge in Libbey's new strategies regarding sustainability as well as its significant growth in various global markets.

The retail and commercial table glass and dishware company was founded in Toledo more than 100 years ago. Libbey exports to 100 countries and works with retail giants like Walmart, Target and Kmart.

The lecture is expected to run for an hour; a reception will follow.
