BGSU H1N1 Update
What to do if you have the flu

Student Handout

You have been diagnosed with influenza or influenza-like symptoms. A positive rapid flu test means that you have Type A or B influenza. The rapid flu test does not specifically test for H1N1 (swine flu) .

You can stay in your residence hall or apartment. Stay away from others to minimize transmission. If you and your roommate choose to remain in your room together:

  • keep distance between you
  • wear a mask (available at the residence halls at the Front Desk) or cough and sneeze into your sleeve.
  • practice good hand washing techniques using soap and water or hand sanitizer.

Hopefully you have chosen a “Flu Buddy” to assist you if you become ill. If you do not have a “Flu Buddy” and you live in the residence halls, please notify your R.A. or Front Desk concerning having meals delivered to your room.

You may go home if you wish.

You may return to class/work once you are “fever free” for 24 hours without the help of Tylenol, Motrin/Ibuprofen or other fever reducing medications. A normal temperature is 98.6°. If you do not have a thermometer, one can be purchased at the Student Health Service Pharmacy for $2.15.

If you have concerns regarding missed classes, contact your instructor as soon as possible via email or a phone call. If you will be out of class for more than three days you may call the Office of the Dean of Students to assist you in contacting your professors at 372-2843

Follow your provider’s advice for self care and follow all instructions regarding any medications you may have been prescribed.

Your symptoms may last 7 – 10 days. If you have a significant worsening of your symptoms especially wheezing or shortness of breath, return to the Student Health Service for follow up care or, after hours, at an urgent care or emergency room facility.
