Assistant professor of musicology/composition/theory Expertise: Western art music; avant-garde and popular music; the culture of Scandinavian countries. Credentials: Master’s degrees in musicology from McGill University and in music education from Ingesund College of Music; Ph.D. in musicology
from the University of Gothenburg. Has presented papers at conferences of the American Society for Aesthetics, Canadian University
Music Society, International Musicological Society, College Music Society, Royal Musical Association, Society for Music Theory,
and the Swedish Musicological Society. Has also contributed articles to a number of periodicals, journals and newspapers,

Dr. Emily Freeman Brown

Dr. Joyce Eastlund Gromko
Professor of music education Expertise: General music for all students regardless of previous experience, and teaching methods that lead to musical literacy for
students in preschool through high school. Also interested in Montessori and Quaker schools as environments designed to teach
children skills of negotiation and conflict resolution; importance of apprenticeships in teacher education, and the effectiveness
of teaching difficult concepts in a student’s primary language as opposed to a second language. Credentials: Bachelor’s degree from Luther College, master’s degree in music from San Diego State University, and doctorate in music education
from Indiana University. Gromko coordinates and directs the New Works for Youth children’s music ensemble, comprised of children
from several local schools. These children perform works composed by BGSU music faculty and graduate students. Her research
has been published in a number of professional publications, and she has presented to the Music Educators National Conference

Dr. Carol Hayward
Assistant professor of music education Expertise: Wind bands; marching bands; conducting and music education; comprehensive musicianship through performance. Credentials:
Bachelor’s degree in music education from Capital University, master’s degree in music education and doctoral degree in conducting
from Ohio State University. Director of the BGSU Falcon Marching Band, conductor of the BGSU Concert Band, and winner of the
2006 Merrill McEwen Award. Hayward has presented to the Ohio Music Education Association, Music Educators National Conference,
