Picture books focus of annual conference
BOWLING GREEN, O.—The 19th annual Book and Reader Conference, “Focus on Picture Books: Art in Action,” co-sponsored by the
Cooperative Services for Children's Literature and the Curriculum Resource Center at Bowling Green State University, will
be held from 4-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at Bluffton Middle School in Bluffton.
The Hughes Moir and Bonnie Chambers Lecture keynote address will be delivered at 7 p.m. by Ohio author and illustrator Dominic
Catalano, whose books include “Mr. Basset Plays,” the tale of a wealthy business dog who learns the joy of play. He has also
illustrated dozens of books for various authors and recently teamed with Miriam Aroner to present “Clink, Clank, Clunk,” the
story of Rabbit and his dilapidated jalopy.
Workshop sessions are available for preschool through seventh-grade classroom teachers, librarians, parents and home-school
educators.
Sessions will begin at 4:30 p.m. and include “Hands-on Science using NSTA Trade Books,” with Dr. Julie McIntosh of the University
of Findlay; “Pairing Music with Picture Books,” with Nancy Sugden of BGSU; “The Art and Language of Picture Book Reviewing,”
with Stacey Osborn of BGSU; “Mazza Museum,” with Ben Sapp of the University of Findlay, and “The Best Picture Books of 2006,”
with Cathy Bartel and Lisa Green of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library.
The conference registration fee is $15. The cost is $8 for students.
Books by Dominic Catalano and additional children's titles will be displayed and available for purchase through Reading Railroad
of Sylvania.
