Music students win at MTNA Competition BOWLING GREEN, O.—Several Bowling Green State University students won prizes at the state-level Music Teachers National Association
(MTNA) competition held recently in Columbus.
Founded in 1876, the MTNA annual competition is for elementary-aged through college-aged students. The three-tiered competitions
begin at the state level. First-place winners of each state competition advance to division competitions, then each division
winner competes at the national conference. There are five categories: Junior High School Performance, High School Performance,
Collegiate Artist Performance, Collegiate Chamber Music Performance and Student Composition.
The purpose of the MTNA performance competitions is to provide educational experiences for students and teachers and to recognize
exceptionally talented young artists and their teachers in their pursuit of musical excellence.
BGSU’s Rubix Saxophone Quartet, under the direction of Dr. John Sampen, Distinguished Research/Artist Professor, won the
MTNA State Chamber Music Performance Competition. The quartet now advances to the East Central Division Competition on Jan.
20-22 at Ball State University.
Quartet members are: Michael Van Pelt, a graduate student majoring in music performance from Maineville; David Babich, a senior
music-education major from Amherst; Susan Poirier, a graduate student majoring in performance from South Hadley, Mass., and
Katie Schuh, a senior music-performance major from Burke, Va.
Ryan Muncy, a second-year graduate student from Sellersburg, Ind. won the Woodwind Division of the MTNA State Young Artist
Performance Competition. He advances to the East Central Division Competition in January for a national position. Muncy studies
saxophone with Sampen.
The Chaology Quartet, also directed by Sampen, was an alternative winner for the MTNA State Chamber Music Performance Competition.
Quartet members include Chris Bartz, a junior music performance major from Kirkwood, Mo.; Adam Liddle, a freshman pre-music
performance major from Upper Arlington; Carl Wiggins, a junior music education major from Clarksburg, Md., and Jessica Simms,
a senior music-performance major from Columbus.
Ruoxu Chen, a sophomore from China, received honorable mention in the Young Artist Piano Competition. Chen studies piano with
Virginia Marks, a Distinguished Teaching Professor in BGSU’s College of Musical Arts.
The 2006 MTNA National Conference will be held March 25-29 at the Austin Convention Center in Texas.
