Students raise money for hurricane relief

BOWLING GREEN, O.—A student-led effort under way the past three weeks at Bowling Green State University has raised more than $4,000 in cash for hurricane recovery efforts in Mobile, Ala.

Undergraduate Student Government President Aaron Shumaker of Chesterland, a senior applied health science major; Graduate Student Senate President Zach Hilpert, a master’s degree student in American culture studies, and 2005 Homecoming Student Steering Committee Director Sam Kuntz of Cleveland, a senior child, family and community service major, organized the effort.

This week they presented a check for $4,370.58 to Erin Brown Hachtel, director of the Wood County District Office of the American Red Cross in Bowling Green. The contributions now will be directed to the American Red Cross chapter serving those who live in Mobile.

The BGSU Falcon football team played in Mobile at the 2004 GMAC Bowl against the University of Memphis. Because of the gracious hospitality shown to Falcon fans, the BGSU student leaders wanted to direct donations to the Mobile Hurricane Katrina recovery effort.

Fund-raising began Sept. 9 at the campus annual fall picnic and continued with a series of campus events, including a Homecoming Lip Sync contest, a Songs for Hope Benefit Concert, a Homecoming pizza dinner and a fund-raising table at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

Nearly 25 student organizations took part. The groups included the Undergraduate Student Government, Graduate Student Senate, American Red Cross Club-Bowling Green Chapter, Homecoming Student Steering Committee, Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, Student Alumni Connection, the President’s Leadership Academy, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Mortar Board, Pan Hellenic Council, the India Student Association, Intramural Advisory Board, Student Athlete Advisory Council, Dance Marathon, students from the Department of Theatre and Film, the Latino Student Union, and Chinese Students and Scholars Association.

Other student groups aiding victims of the hurricane through fund raising include the campus chapter of the NAACP, Praecepta in the College of Musical Arts, Kappa Alpha Order, the BG Law Society and Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity.

In addition, last month the BGSU Administrative Staff and Classified Staff councils gave $2,600 to the American Red Cross, and the annual BG Gives Back Campaign is continuing to raise money this month. University faculty and staff can direct contributions to relief efforts through the annual United Way drive.

University students also are continuing to do what they can to assist, with an on-campus blood drive scheduled in late October. BGSU students will compete with students from the University of Toledo in “Blood Bowl IV” to see which campus will give the most. The blood drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 24-27 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

The Greater Toledo Area Chapter of the American Red Cross also is planning to hold training sessions on campus for new Red Cross volunteers. A number of students, faculty and staff have expressed interest in helping with reconstruction during academic breaks later in the year.
