Alumni artists show work on campus BOWLING GREEN, O.—“Leading Lights: BGSU Alumni Artists” is on display through Oct. 1 in the Dorothy Urber Bryan Gallery at
the Bowling Green State University Fine Arts Center. A remarkable diversity of work—from paintings to small brooches to annual
reports—is being shown.
Thirty-three successful artists, spanning the graduating classes of 1958 through 2003, and in all career stages, are represented.
Several of the alumni will present a panel discussion, “Making It: Tools for Success in Balancing Art, Life and Work” from
3-5 p.m. Sept. 30 in 204 Fine Arts Center. A reception from 5-7 p.m. will follow. Panelists will include Remy Miller, a professor
at the Memphis College of Art; Rick Valicenti, an internationally known graphic designer based in Chicago, and Rob Erdle,
a Regents’ Professor in the School of Visual Arts at the University of North Texas. A number of other alumni are expected
to attend the events, which coincide with BGSU’s Homecoming weekend.
The exhibit is made possible with the support from the BGSU Alumni Association, College of Arts & Sciences, Graduate College,
School of Art and Medici Circle.
The exhibitors include Bernie Casey, who received both his BFA (1961) and MFA (1966) degrees from BGSU. Known to many for
his years as a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams, others know him through his motion picture
career. As an artist and art educator he has had more than 30 solo shows, received an honorary doctorate from the Savannah
College of Art and Design and acquired a prestigious list of collectors. The three portraits in “Leading Lights” are from
his new “Suit Suite” series, all in his signature jewel-tone palette.
Many of the BGSU alumni in the show now teach at other universities, including metalsmith Marilyn da Silva (California College
of Arts and Crafts), watercolorist Rob Erdle, painters Remy Miller, Jaye Bumbaugh (Bluffton College), Mike Wille (Illinois
State University), Julie Dummermuth (Wayne State University), Gabrielle Mayer (University of Louisville), and sculptor Brett
Hunter (Alfred University), among others.
Others are commercial artists, such as designer James Terman, whose SILK Soymilk cartons and bottles can be seen on every
grocer’s shelves; Kathy Sobb, who designs brochures and annual reports for such big-name firms as Lehman Brothers, and Nomar
Perez, who is a designer for American Greetings. Former BGSU students Judy Warren Blaydon and Amanda Butler Kolar are simply
busy making art.
