Bowling Green Philharmonia releases CD BOWLING GREEN, O.—The Bowling Green Philharmonia, under the direction of Dr. Emily Freeman Brown, has released its fourth
compact disc on the Albany Records label.
Continuing the series “The Composer’s Voice: New Music From Bowling Green,” the disc includes works by Samuel Adler, Shulamit
Ran, Chen Yi, Kevin Puts and Orianna Webb. All of the works appear on disc for the first time and were recorded following
performances at Bowling Green State University’s annual New Music and Art Festival.
Violinist Penny Thompson Kruse, an associate professor of violin, and flutist Christina Jennings, a visiting professor during
the 2002-03 academic year, are featured soloists.
The student orchestra of Bowling Green’s College of Musical Arts, the Philharmonia was founded in 1918 by a decree of the
University president. At that time the 20-member orchestra was comprised of students and faculty. Today, the ensemble of more
than 100 student musicians performs several times a year in orchestral, chamber orchestra and opera presentations.
Brown has served as director of orchestral activities and music director of the Bowling Green Opera Theater since 1989. She
has performed with orchestras in Europe, South America and the United States, including the national symphonies of Chile,
Latvia and Macedonia, the State Philharmonic of Sibiu (Romania), the Pleven Philharmonic (Bulgaria) and more. Summer 2005
finds her leading a two-week, conductor-training workshop in Bulgaria.
