Students win Fischoff Competition gold medal BOWLING GREEN, O.—The Blue Square Saxophone Quartet from the Bowling Green State University College of Musical Arts won the
gold medal and a $3,000 cash prize in the senior wind division of the 32nd annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.
The competition was held May 6-8 at the DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Notre Dame. More than
100 performances take place during the two-day event.
Founded in 1973 by Joseph E. Fischoff and the South Bend Chamber Music Society, the competition encourages young people to
pursue chamber music study and performance. The largest chamber music competition in the nation, it also is the only one with
both a senior and a junior division in which students from some the finest American conservatories and music schools compete.
The Blue Square Saxophone Quartet is under the direction of BGSU Distinguished Artist/Research Professor Dr. John Sampen.
Its members are soprano Jeff Heisler, a second-year graduate student from Lapeer, Mich.; alto Nathan Mandel, a second-year
graduate student from Charlestown, W.Va. tenor Chris Chmielewski, a junior from Buffalo Grove, Ill., and baritone Allison
Balcetis, a senior from Omaha, Neb.
The quartet was chosen to compete in the semifinal round through a video application process. A total of 16 ensembles competed
in the senior wind division category.
The BGSU student saxophonists also recently won third place in the Music Teachers National Association’s Chamber Music Performance
National Competition in Seattle.
