Autism conference features Stephen Shore
BOWLING GREEN, O.—For the many people dealing with autism on an everyday basis, finding information about autism, services
and available resources is not always easy. “What’s Happening with Autism?” will bring together parents, teachers and counselors
to network and share information.
The fourth annual Autism Summit of Northwest Ohio will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 11 at the Bowen-Thompson Student
Union on the Bowling Green State University campus. The conference is sponsored by BGSU’s College of Education and Human Development
and Continuing and Extended Education and the Wood County Educational Service Center.
Keynote speaker Stephen Shore, a nationally recognized autism consultant, will give a presentation titled “Life on and Slightly
to the Right of the Autism Spectrum: Reaching a Greater Understanding.”
In addition to working with children and advocating for a better quality of life for people with autism, Shore speaks and
consults internationally on adult issues pertaining to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure. His
books on these issues include “Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome” and the recently released
“Ask and Tell: Self-Advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum.”
Shore serves as board president of the Asperger’s Association of New England as well as on the board of directors for Unlocking
Autism, the Autism Services Association of Massachusetts, MAAP Services for Autism and Asperger Spectrum, and the College
Internship Program.
After the keynote presentation, concurrent sessions will examine early childhood autism, and adolescent and adult autism.
Ann Pilewskie, autism coordinator for the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI), will lead the early childhood
discussion, and Shore will lead the adult and adolescent discussion.
In the afternoon, Andie Riley, a teacher and coordinator with the Northwest Ohio Autism Regional Council, will lead a panel
discussion on “Delivery for Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome,” and Dr. Robert Cunningham, director of disability services at
BGSU, will lead a panel discussion on “Adolescent and Post-Secondary Education.”
Wrapping up the conference, Ohio state Rep. Jon Peterson will report on the work of the governor’s task force on autism.
Approval is pending for social worker, counselor, psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and MRDD CEUs. Teachers
who need education CEUs may submit the certificates to their Regional Professional Development Center.
The fee for the conference is $69 with CEUs, $49 without CEUs and $15 for students. For more information, contact Ann Betts
