Want to keep those holiday pounds off?

BOWLING GREEN, O.—It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but not necessarily for calorie counters. The holidays offer more than their share of culinary temptation, but a little forethought, and a good attitude, can help keep those extra pounds at bay, says Dr. Robert Carels, a psychologist and weight-loss researcher at Bowling Green State University.

The assistant professor advises planning ahead—knowing, if possible, what will be on the menu where you’re going, and determining what you want to eat while there. Beyond that, he says:

—If it’s a special event, “bank your calories,” cutting back in anticipation of what awaits you at the party.

—Try to eat something that’s good for you before going to a gathering where healthy food may be in short supply.

—Be selective, considering what on the table is special and what isn’t. For instance, if there’s something in the spread that’s only available to you this time of year, skip the food that you can get any day of the week at the grocery store, Carels suggests.

—Eat slowly, which will help you know better when you’re feeling full.

If you’re at a buffet, it’s better to be last in line than first. Those at the front of the line are more likely to be finished, and back in line for seconds, before everyone else is even served, he explains.

But if, despite your best intentions, you have a “bad night,” try to keep a positive attitude, adds Carels, who has co-authored a number of journal articles on weight loss. Rather than beating yourself up about overdoing it, he says, think about how you can make up for it in the next week, whether through calorie cutting, increased exercise or both.
