Undergraduate research office created at BGSU BOWLING GREEN, O.— To support and encourage undergraduate research, Bowling Green State University has created a new Office
of Undergraduate Research. Dr. John Farver, an associate professor of geology, will serve as its director.
BGSU views inquiry and student engagement in research and other creative endeavors as critical components of an undergraduate
education.
“This is what really sets BGSU apart from the two-year and smaller colleges and even some of the very large universities—undergraduates
have the opportunity to do meaningful work directly with senior faculty,” Farver said. The newly created office will be a
focal point for undergraduate research endeavors and seek to ignite in students a lifelong passion for learning and research.
“We hope,” Farver added, “to centralize University-wide efforts and make them more efficient.”
Farver has extensive experience with undergraduate research, both as a student and as a faculty member in a department that
requires its students to conduct research projects.
“We have good models in place and now, with institutional support, we are ready to take it to the next level,” he said.
Plans include creating a broad-based advisory board for undergraduate research, involving undergraduates in the second annual
BGSU Research Conference in November and promoting undergraduate research and creative activities across campus.
