Sept. 30 is deadline to enter high school Web design contest

BOWLING GREEN, O.— Northwest Ohio high school students are eligible to win prizes for their schools or themselves in a Web-design contest sponsored by Bowling Green State University.

Prizes will be presented for: the best high school Web page, which carries a $500 cash award; the top Web page for a high school organization, with the winning entrant receiving a digital camera, and the best personal Web page, whose designer will take home a handheld personal digital assistant (PDA).

Contest criteria include a main page, with at least three internal links, and four to eight pages overall. Entries should be submitted on a compact disc—postmarked no later than Sept. 30—to: Kim Fleshman, 200 Saddlemire Student Services Building, BGSU, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403. A Microsoft Word document with a list of the designers should be included on the CD.

Registration of personal and school information is also required by Sept. 30 in order to have a Web site judged. The registration form may be accessed at, and submitted from: www.bgsu.edu/offices/studenttech/techfair/contestreg.html. Only one registration form is required per site.

Entries will be judged on the basis of:

• Content, including spelling, grammar and format. Content should be appropriate for an academic audience. Also, participants will be liable for any infringement of U.S. copyright laws, which govern the reproduction of copyrighted material.

• Design, which may include Web formats such as .mov, .wav, .jpg, .gif and .swf. Photoshop documents should be saved as one of these formats; no .psd or .tif files are allowed.

• Ease of use. Judges will be looking for a user-friendly site that loads quickly and has working links.

The contest is open to all high schools, public and parochial, in 21 counties: Allen, Auglaize, Crawford, Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Huron, Lucas, Mercer, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Van Wert, Williams, Wood and Wyandot.

Prizes will be awarded at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 23 during BGSU’s annual Northwest Ohio Technology Fair, to be held in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. At least one person from the submitted list of designers must be present to claim a prize.

The intent of the contest is “to promote and recognize high school student interest in Web-based technology in northwest Ohio,” said Duane Whitmire, director of BGSU’s Student Technology Center. Teachers are encouraged to bring their classes to the fair, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
