Ralph Nader to speak at BGSU on Sept. 10
BOWLING GREEN, O. — Ralph Nader, the longtime consumer advocate and a 2000 presidential candidate, will speak Sept. 10 in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom of Bowling Green State University’s Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

Nader will discuss such topics as activism, politics, the environment and public safety in his address, which will highlight a program that begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for students and $10 for the general public except children 12 and under, who will get in free.

Speaking before Nader will be Harvey Wasserman, senior adviser to Greenpeace USA and the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, and senior editor of The (Columbus) Free Press. Wasserman, a co-founder of Citizen Protection Ohio and the anti-nuclear Clamshell Alliance, will discuss sustainable energy and the anti-nuclear movement.

Nader, who also spoke at BGSU in 1970, 1981 and 1986, was the Green Party candidate for president in 2000. That campaign is the subject of his book, “Crashing the Party: How to Tell the Truth and Still Run for President.”

His first book, “Unsafe at Any Speed,” took on General Motors and its automobile safety record in 1965. Resulting Senate hearings and motor vehicle safety laws propelled Nader into the public eye.

He subsequently helped draft and pass a number of other laws, including the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Meat and Poultry Inspection Rules, the Air and Water Pollution Control laws and the Freedom of Information Act. He was instrumental as well in the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century, Nader has also founded numerous citizen groups. Among them are the Center for the Study of Responsive Law, the Center for Auto Safety, Public Citizen, the Pension Rights Center, Citizen Works, Essential Information, Democracy Rising, the National Coalition for Universities in the Public Interest, and Student Public Research Interest Groups, which operate in more than 20 states.

Sponsoring Nader’s appearance at BGSU are the University’s Center for Innovative and Transformative Education, Disability Services for Students, Student Rehabilitation Association, Department of Political Science and Division of Intervention Services.

Intervention Services is also co-sponsoring a workshop at Owens Community College where Nader will be the keynote speaker that day. His 1:30 p.m. address, “Ethics and Consumer Advocacy” at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts on the Owens campus is free.
