'When You Move Out, Don't Throw It Out' BOWLING GREEN, OH. -- For the second year in a row, Bowling Green State University students and staff will be collecting unwanted
clothing, household goods and non-perishable food items for distribution to a number of food pantries, homeless and domestic
violence shelters, and other organizations for the needy in the area. "
When You Move Out, Don't Throw It Out" collection bins will be placed in all residence halls and convenience stores around
campus beginning Sunday (April 27). As students prepare to move out of the residence halls, the collection provides a way
for them to put their castoffs to good use, according to Dr. Nick Hennessy, associate director of residence life for educational
initiatives, which is heading up the effort.
Students responded with unexpected generosity last year when Residence Life initiated the campaign, filling the former Forum
in Saddlemire Student Services Building to overflowing.
With that experience in mind, Hennessy said, many more student groups have been brought into the process this year. A steering
committee has been formed and students will help with the collecting and sorting of donations. And additional vehicles have
been located with which to haul the donations to the Darrow Hall Honors Center, the central collection center, which is located
in the Kreischer Quadrangle.
The community is also welcome to donate items to the collection, Hennessy said. "People are welcome to drop their unwanted
but usable items off at the Darrow Hall collection site or the Office of Residence Life, and we will be happy to take them
over," he said.
An added bonus of the collection effort is that it diverts many pounds of material from the local landfill while helping those
in need.
Some of the 15 organizations to receive donations are the Bowling Green Christian Food Pantry; the Aurora Project and La Posada
shelters and the Cherry Street Mission, all in Toledo; Rural Opportunities in Bowling Green; St. Vincent de Paul; the Salvation
Army, and area churches with outreach programs.
The program, sponsored by the Office of Residence Life, has also received support from the BGSU Recycling Program, Recreational
Sports, the Office of Campus Involvement, Pepsi Inc., Kroger and the Special Programs Series Fund of Residence Life, among
others.
