Freshman wins national spokesperson title BOWLING GREEN, O. – Mieasha Hicks, a freshman at Bowling Green State University, recently won the title of national youth
spokesperson for the Boys and Girls Club of America. The first person from the Toledo area to win the national competition,
she also was awarded more than $17,000 in scholarships and gifts as part of the honor.
Hicks, who was an honor student at Central Catholic High School, is studying microbiology at BGSU. She hopes to pursue a career
in pediatric medicine. As spokesperson for the Boys and Girls Club of America, she will travel throughout the United States
this coming year, sharing a message of hope and dedication to other young men and women. “
I want young people to know that even if you have down times in your life, your future can still be bright,” says Hicks.
Those taking part in the national competition wrote essays about the impact the Boys and Girls Club has had on their lives
and plans for the future. They were also required to give a three-minute speech to a panel of judges.
Hicks faced numerous obstacles early in life. Her father died when she was 11 and her mother, who married as a teenager, moved
to Florida. She was raised by her grandmother and two aunts. Despite these challenges, the young woman remained a top student
while in high school and was involved in cheerleading, student council, and the school choir.
Today, Hicks juggles college courses with the cross-country traveling her new role requires. She also works part-time at the
local Boys and Girls Club and is a member of the Sylvania Sparks competition cheer team. As part of her tenure as national
spokesperson, Hicks will have an opportunity to meet President Bush.
