National organization honors professor for outstanding academic advising

BOWLING GREEN, O.--A Bowling Green State University professor is honored in Orlando, Florida, by the National Academic Advising Association for his outstanding work with students.

Dr. Travis Chapin of Bowling Green will receive an NACADA Outstanding Advisor Award. The honor, which is co-sponsored by ACT Inc., recognizes individuals who are making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. In addition to a plaque, he will receive a complimentary membership in NACADA and complimentary registration at the conference.

Award recipients are chosen based on a variety of criteria that demonstrate exemplary assistance to students, including availability to advisees, frequency of contact, evidence of student success, advisee evaluations and a caring attitude toward students.

Anyone who serves as an advisor in a post-secondary institution may be nominated for the award.

An associate professor of construction management and technology, Chapin received a President’s Award at BGSU for academic advising of undergraduate students and a similar advising award from the University’s College of Technology last year. Each year he advises about 50 students, including several graduate students.

A member of Bowling Green’s faculty since 1989, Chapin is a native of Norwalk. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Purdue University and is a registered professional engineer.

Before becoming an educator he worked in the construction industry for 15 years. He serves the profession through involvement and leadership in the Associated Schools of Construction, the Ohio Contractors Association and the Associated General Contractors of America. (Posted 10/2/2000)
