Student
body president recognized for leadership
BOWLING GREEN,
O.The leadership shown by Marcos Popovich of Toledo
earned the BGSU senior a 2000 Diamante Outstanding Youth
Leadership Award this fall.
Created in
1989 by IMAGE of northwest Ohio, the awards were established
to promote and reward individuals and organizations in
the local Latino community for outstanding achievements
and service to: arts and entertainment, business and industry,
community service, education, employment, Latino leadership,
youth leadership and sports.
Thus far, more
than 65 individuals, organizations and programs have received
Diamante Awards for their contributions to the northwest
Ohio Latino community.
Popovich, who
is majoring in ethnic studies and interpersonal communications,
is serving as president of BGSU's Undergraduate Student
Government for the 2000-01 school year.
Active in student
government since his freshman year, he has served as a
USG senator and as a member of numerous committees, including
the Advisory Committee on General Fee Allocations.
He also has
served as president of the University's La Union de Estudiantes
Latinos (Latino Student Union), a 100-plus-member organization
which sponsors educational and social programs on the
campus and in the community. His responsibilities included
representing Latino students on several University committees
and task forces.
A Dean's List
student on campus, he is a 1997 graduate of St. John's
High School and has received numerous awards for academic
excellence and leadership, including being named USG Student
Leader of the Year and the Chapman Learning Community
