THIRD FESTIVAL SERIES EVENT TO FEATURE ANDRÉ WATTS

BOWLING GREEN, O.--Pianist André Watts returns to Bowling Green State University for an appearance in the Festival Series at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.

In addition to his performance that evening, Watts will be the guest host for the Festival Forum at 7 p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall at the center. The forum is a free, 30-minute, pre-concert discussion of the evening's program.

The performance, part of the series sponsored by BGSU’s College of Musical Arts, is the Lois M. Nitschke Memorial Concert, supported by Norman Nitschke and his family in memory of his wife.

The concert is also a Heartland Arts Fund Program. The Heartland Arts Fund is a collaborative venture of Arts Midwest, Mid-America Arts Alliance, their member state arts agencies (Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin) with primary funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, and support from private contributors.

The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

Watts burst upon the music world at the age of 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic in Young People’s Concerts broadcast nationwide on CBS. Two weeks later, Bernstein asked him to substitute at the last minute for the ailing Glenn Gould in performances of Liszt’s E-flat concerto with the New York Philharmonic, thus launching his career in storybook fashion.

A much-honored artist who has played before royalty in Europe and heads of government in nations all over the world, Watts received the Avery Fisher Prize in 1988.

At age 26 he was the youngest person ever to receive an Honorary Doctorate from Yale University, and he has since received numerous honors from highly respected schools. Watts is serving as the artist-in-residence at the University of Maryland for the 2000-01 season.

At Bowling Green, Watts will perform Haydn’s "Sonata No. 58 in C Major," Mozart’s "Rondo in A Minor," Beethoven’s "Sonata in F Minor, Op. 57" and Chopin’s "Nocturne in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 1" and "Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor, Op. 35."

Single tickets can be purchased for $38, $30 and $22. Tickets can be ordered by calling the Moore Musical Arts Center box office at (419) 372-8171 or 1-800-589-2224.
