Friends help library blossom

The north side of Jerome Library got a facelift recently with help from the Friends of the University Libraries and Learning Resources. Using materials bought with funds from a Friends Equipment Award, BGSU library staff and Wood Lane staff and consumers spent a day preparing and planting the flowerbeds on that side of the building.

"That is the side that is most visible to parents when they visit for Family Weekend and to students during Orientation and Registration," Beverly Stearns, library director of administrative services and programs and Friends treasurer, said of the Green Space Project.

The beds will now be home to colorful salvia and liatris, yucca and ornamental grasses and, in the spring, crocuses and daffodils.

The Green Space project, proposed by library technical services unit staff, will also serve as a feasibility study for future community green-space projects. Participating in the activity were library and technical services staff, BGSU horticultural staff, Wood Lane Residential Services Recreation staff and Wood Lane residents, augmented by Wood Lane Community Employment Services staff.

The Friends allocated a total of $2,500 in equipment awards this year. The other projects funded were $800 for new dies for the Ellison machine in the Curriculum Resource Center, $500 for heavy-duty plastic book bags for use by library patrons, $400 for a wall-mounted display case for the Music Library and Sound Recording Archives, and $200 for golf pencils with the Friends logo imprinted for use by library patrons.

The equipment awards are designed to supplement libraries and learning resources units' budgets by providing support for items not typically covered by those budgets.
